Well...it was 1935

A new thread for last-minute notifications.     Fans of Will Hay may wish to see his classic "Oh, Mr Porter!" (1937) when his bungling on the railway gets him banished to Buggleskelly in Northern Ireland where he forms a partnership in incompetence with Moore Marriott and Graham Moffatt.

BBC 4    TONIGHT     "Oh, Mr Porter!"     22.00 hrs  23.20 hrs

          'Oh, Mr Porter,
           What shall I do...?

Already marked off in the Radio Times 9 days ago, but thanks for the reminder. Part of a second steam evening IIRC. The Will Hay film I look forward to seeing again on the box is "The Goose Steps Out", if only to hear again how "Slough" is to be pronounced. Wink

Thanks, Bryn.    I rather feared that I may be the only person on the MBs who could identify Will Hay.   Curiously, I managed to get an 8 DVD box set of his films from HMV online, a few weeks ago, for £15  99 and I just had a quick shufti to see whether "The Goose Steps Out" (1942) was included; alas no.   I certainly remember a very young Peter Ustinov as one of Hay's pupils, risking their lives as they entered Nazi Germany prior to the war.

The box set includes, 'Boys Will Be Boys', Ask a Policeman, Convict 99, Good Morning Boys, Hey! Hey! USA, Where There's A Will, Windbag the Sailor, Old Bones of the River and Oh! Mr Porter

I used to wonder why, although enjoying the work of Griff Rhys Jones, I was also disconcerted, or perhaps slightly piqued.   Took me ages to reconcile his persona with Will Hay!

My piano teacher used to love Will Hay, and I remember a few evenings around Christmas when he would have video evenings and, I think, that 'The Goose Steps Out' and 'Oh! Mr Porter' were included.
So you're certainly not alone!

For my part, Will Hay made a far better 'Hitler' than Chaplin did. Wink

I see someone is offering a 'DVD' of "The Goose Steps Out" and another Will Hay film on ebay for a pretty low price, but it seems likely to be a burned version of a transfer form VHS. There is a big notice about how the films are out of copyright.

It will turn up o the box, sooner or later, and I can wait. Wink

I would love to get my grubby paws on a DVD of "Oh Mr.Porter!", and wasn't there another Will Hay comedy, "Go To Blazes" with Will Hay (and Albert and Arbuckle)?

Wikipedia seems to agree with you!
Just skimming that article brings back a number of happy memories that seem to have been buried for a while.

Not sure if this is the right thread but on the subject of trains on the 23rd BBC4 at 9pm have postwar films made by the British Transport film unit followed by a 1954 documentary of the journey of a train from Kings Cross to Edinburgh
