Just read the following on one of my irregular visits to the blog: http://theovergrownpath.blogspot.com/2007/05/you-are-looking-at-future-of-radio.html

and was intrigued by this paragraph, in regard to computerised playlists.

"The particular advantage of the Selector system was that it enabled [Classic FM] to provide a balanced rotation of music, composers and performers and to reflect in the frequency of choice of track and in the choice of time when it was played its popularity and mood, and to avoid repetition or the personal preference of the presenter influencing the selection of the music played on the air."

Avoid repetition?? how well i know The Lark Ascending, Solvejg's Song and Fantasia on Greensleeves at the expense of other (and imho far superior) pieces which require a greater mental capacity (an ultimate triumph of popularity there if ever there was one).

having said that the comments re. Classic FM vs. Radio 3 further down are interesting, and reflect much which has been said on this board.

the future is historical! Selector software has been employed in mainstream music radio since the 1980s. It is a great bland evil, smoothing off corners, creating aural wallpaper for listeners who don't really want to listen.

Adorno spins in his grave.

Am I the only one who found the suggestion that this software can override "the personal preference of the presenter" slightly sinister?
