An absolute treat coming up for me on the CFM Evening Concert on Wed 24 Oct--if I ever remember to record it, as I'm out that night!

A new CD of Sullivan's Irish Symphony and Mackerras' Pineapple Poll arrangement will be played in its entirety that evening.  The symphony, though no masterpiece, is a remarkable product for a lad of 21 and Pineapple Poll is guaranteed to cheer its listeners up big-time.

The disc, a snip at Naxos price, features the Royal Liverpool Phil under David Lloyd-Jones and gets a 5 star review in the latest CFM magazine.

I may or may not actually buy it, as I already have the Symphony in Hickox's account and Mackerras' own version of Pineapple Poll, but I'd really like to hear any new thoughts on the works.

Regrettably there's a grouping of British musicians who steadfastly refuse to take Sullivan seriously Sad  If only he'd been a failure, they'd be lauding him to the rafters...

As regular visitors to this MB might have noticed, I am very interested in Sullivan's music, especially without Gilbert, and I'm always keen to promote it. I posted the following on the Now Spinning thread when I received my copy of this CD:

Having listened to the CD a few more times since then, I think I was rather harsh, concentrating on negative aspects. There's still plenty to enjoy on this CD and I would urge anyone to splash out on it. I think my hopes had been too high when I first listened to it, as I find any new CD of Sullivan's music an exciting event and something I have to buy.

Do listen to the CFM special evening and thanks, iaw, for bringing it to our notice. Perhaps it's not a masterpiece but it's certainly underrated. People rave about Bizet's symphony in C and I would like to think that this ranks alongside it.

When in doubt, wash.

Another Sullivan fan here - but I'm not familiar with much of his music not associated with Gilbert.

Merely corroborative detail, intended to give artistic verisimilitude to an otherwise bald and unconvincing narrative.

My pleasure.  Thanks for mentioning the Bizet, which is one of the most delightful little works that I know.

I have a couple of Naxos Historical recordings of G&S. They tend to fill up any spare time with Sullivan pieces. My copy of Iolanthe has Pineapple Poll by the Sadlers Wells Orchestra under Mackerras. Mind you, it was recorded in 1951!

I have that Iolanthe/Pineapple Poll CD too. The Mackerras recording of Pineapple Poll I mentioned in the link above was the one he made in 1982 with the Philharmonia Orchestra (it's currently coupled with Princess Ida from Decca). The 1951 version shows its age, although it is fascinating to hear the original forces. But Naxos are somewhat to blame. The D'Oyly Carte recordings from the 1950s are available on one or two labels as the copyrights on them have expired and Naxos always seems to be the worst. They seem to have taken little care over the transfers and the result is a rather dull, boxy sound. I find all of this a great shame as I rather like Naxos and I appreciate what they've done for classical recordings generally.

Just to add variety, I've got the 1960 recording of Mackerras with the RPO.  I learnt the piece from this recording many years ago.

Does anyone remember a recording by the Pro Arte Orchestra under John Hollingsworth?  I had it out of the library once.  Good and on an inexpensive label but it just didn't quite have the verve of Sir Charles' accounts.
