For the next three nights Nick Bailey will be playing all six of the Tchaikovsky symphony recordings, plus other music by the composer.

I can work and listen to Tchaikovsky  Smiley  already tonight on ClassicFM I've listened to music from Romeo & Juliet and the Symphony No.1, now we are to have Francesca da Rimini, all by Kurt Masur conducting the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra.

Later tonight, Symphony No 2 and the Serenade for Strings.

Well spotted Ron  Tongue

I am still listening by the way while I've been preparing for some work tomorrow, and my wife seems to have been on the phone all night, or phones, she's currently in the other room with mobile in one hand and cordless landline in the other, I swear they are sometimes at both ears simultaneously....

The Rach 2, just finishing, has been spoiled by the sound of our washing machine spinning at 1600rpm, smittins would have loved that intrusion no doubt  Roll Eyes

I have that recording. People tell me the trumpet goes horribly sharp in the opening. It's not so obvious to me. Any comments?

Well, after the football, I flicked on Classic FM and caught the latter part of

Svendsen: Symphony No.2 in B flat Opus 15
Thomas Dausgaard conducts the Danish National Symphony Orchestra

and very much enjoyed it, would like to here all of it. Apparently Svendsen (1840-1911) wrote concertos for violin and also cello.

and the programme continued with our fine Emma Johnson

Crusell: Clarinet Concerto No.2 in F minor Opus 5
Emma Johnson – clarinet
Sir Charles Groves conducts the English Chamber Orchestra

when will ClassicFM's daytime producers realise that this Crusell concerto is more welcome than the almost daily playlisting they give to Mozart's concerto (3rd movement) Huh

Nick has just said they often play Crusell's 2nd movement on daytime shows Roll Eyes

The 'Evening Concert' tonight has a Scandinavian theme and I reckon I'll be listening till the end:

Nielsen: Symphony No.2 Opus 16
('The Four Temperaments')
Esa-Pekka Salonen conducts the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra

Rautavaara: Piano Concerto No.3 'Gift of Dreams'
Vladimir Ashkenazy  – piano
Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra

Nielsen: Little Suite for Strings Opus 1
Jan Laegers conducts the Odense Symphony Orchestra

Buxtehude: Prelude & Fugue in C minor BWV.137
Marie-Claire Alain – organ of the Schnitger-Ahrend, Groningen

Yes, but between those complete works there's a complete Lyons-Maid icebox full of operatic lollipops of the most predictable kind.  Favourite arias from La Boheme, the Pearl Fishers & Cav??   Never mind CFM, this is straight from the Promenade Bandstand at Paignton Sad

Reiner, eh no, not on the evening concert programme. Tonight's playlist is as I indicated above.

Why criticise a programme that you are not listeneing to??

Classic FM does make me laugh sometimes  Roll Eyes

On one webpage it says:

Thursday's Running Order
Tonight Classic FM will be live from Liverpool.....

Wow, sounds interesting

.....therefore the concert will feature music about Liverpool, or performances by musicians from the city.

Ah, you mean a concert? Or do you mean the Classic FM programme which is called 'Evening Concert' but is in fact a presenter playing complete works from CDs?

Click the link and the  truth is out (again)

Live from Liverpoool means....

Classic FM will be beamed live from the top of Liverpool’s tallest building. It’s all to mark the start of the city’s year as European Capital of Culture.

Are we supposed to know what the tallest building is? Is it the headquarters of Liverpool Assurance Company? Or the kop end at Anfield?

Last up in his express lift to the penthouse will be Nick Bailey for tonight’s Evening Concert of music about Liverpool, or performed by musicians from the city.

the playlist would not look out of place on R3's Through the Night:

Elgar: In the South (Alassio) Opus 50
Douglas Bostock conducts the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra

Beethoven: Symphony No.7 in A major Opus 92
Sir Charles Mackerras conducts the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra

Gershwin: Piano Concerto in F
Peter Donohoe – piano
Sir Simon Rattle conducts the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra
Sir Simon Rattle was born and brought up in Liverpool

Einaudi: Swanire
Marco Decimo – cello
Robert Ziegler conducts the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra

Bruch: Kol Nidrei Opus 47
Han-Na Chang – cello
Mstislav Rostropovich conducts the London Symphony Orchestra
Bruch lived in Liverpool for a while and dedicated Kol Nidrei to the city’s Jewish community.

Mussorgsky: Pictures at an Exhibition
Sir Charles Mackerras conducts the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra

McCartney: A Leaf
Lawrence Foster conducts the London Symphony Orchestra
