The music schedule for the first week of Classical Collection can be studied here:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio3/schedule/2007/04/02/week/

So with that I wonder what folks expect from Monday as Sarah Walker and James Jolly "take us on a journey through great music in fine recordings, both contemporary and historic".

I'm not sure if Mr Jolly makes an appearance the first week Roll Eyes

Doc Walker returns Cool-a known exponent of contemporary music mooches back undetected . Prog has a lame £$%&*title but she will lift it, and Jolly knows what he is doing I think.

I`m going to be a good girl and not pre-judge and I will  give the programme time to `run in` but ..... that title! It makes it sound like a reduced price box of chocolates from a Pound Shop!

So, "Cowan Collection" good, "Classical Collection" bad, eh? Oo perhaps you consider the "Cowan Collection" was a CFM inpired programme, too?

No, I wasn't overly impressed by Cowan Collection as a title either.

OK, the programming is the most important thing, and the title in the grand scheme of things isn't of life or death significance - however, like the voice of the presenter, it can colour the programme's content.

Titles are a tricky issue-just using the presenters' name these days implies a playlist and no other editorial structure. Traditionally any other radio station than BBC 3 or  4 relied on the presenters relied to keep the
audiences' attention-eg for advertisers-and on CFM the Reader's Digest erudition-lite has been carefully cultivated.
I think it would be churlish to knock that because it doesnt claim intellectual gravitas.(Because it lacks shibboleths
it sometimes achieves the dynamics of art ...imho Natalie Wheen on a good run, Simon Bates discussing film and the cultural climate)
Nor I think in a multi-channel multi-media world does 3 any more. After Hutton etc the ground has shifted.
What remains is the authority of the presenters by dint of experience which in the old days was a bit underplayed
even though they did dramatic readings etc at the drop of a hat...and of course listener feedback. The new approach is feeling its way in what comes across as a Stalinist regime of hire fire and ransack so I think its early
days. On the whole its not for me though I'm grateful to the old guard for supporting  my musical and sentimental
education. With which I still think Sarah Walker is the cat's pyjamas.
