Hi All,
I was listening to R3 this morning and they played some Skazi by Medtner.  Obviously, I've heard of him but thus far haven't got around to buying any CDs of his music (except for the Piano concerti on Naxos because they were cheap).  Anyway, does anyone have any thoughts, comments or suggestions as to where to begin with his solo piano music?

(I wasn't sure if this should go in the 20th Century thread or here so i put it here!  Grin )

Two names to look out for are pianists Marc-André Hamelin (who has recorded all the sonatas for Hyperion) and Hamish Milne (who has made a real speciality of Medtner's music). That said, it's also worth coming the catalogues for recordngs of some of his songs which are on a par with, though distinctly different to, Rakhmaninov's. You should also try to get hold of his three sonatas for violin and piano. Much of Medtner's music is now recorded and a fair amount of it still available. There have also been reissues of the composer's own recordings made late in life under the auspices of the Maharajah of Mysore; again, like his friend Rakhmaninov, Medtner was a very considerable pianist.

Interesting: Alistair and I are, I imagine, both Medtner enthusiasts, but we appear to differ when it comes to recommending both performances and pieces. I find Hamelin's version of the sonatas considerably less than definitive despite his undoubted authority elsewhere in the repertory (Godowsky, for instance). I'm enthusiastic about the piano quintet but less taken with the violin sonatas. At least we agree on Hamish Milne! I'll look out some other recommendable performances over the next day or two.

I posted some links to some Medtner recordings on this thread

There are quite a few Medtner recordings on youtube (including the composer's own): worth investigating.

Yes, pretty much at odds, it would seem! The piano quintet, on which Medtner worked on and (I imagine mostly) off for some 45 years and which I seem to recall he himself believed to be the summit of his creative achievement strikes me as a perfectly decent piece - and therefore a sad disappointment coming as it did from a composer who otherwise rarely wrote below his superb best; it seems rather bland to me, especially compared to his finest music.

Anyway, we not only agree on Hamish Milne but on Medtner himself, which I guess is what matters most on this subject!
