I was astonished to hear my “Red Nose Day” request for the Krommer Octet Partitia in B flat, Op.78 being played on Chi-chi’s request show the other Sunday. I had actually requested and hoped to hear the performance by the Sabine Meyer Wind Ensemble that I first heard on R3 two years ago: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio3/morningon3/pip/ra20x/

I was a little disappointed that we heard the Naxos version with the Budapest Wind Ensemble. It was so different, so awfully dainty.

The R3 listing gave the Sabine Mayer record as EMI CDC7 54383-2.  I searched but couldn’t find it so I emailed EMI directly. They replied: “hello, is this the one you mean?  5676432 – Krommer. If so, radio stations are often out of date with their catalogue numbers.  Regards Ray”

This is the version I wanted.  It is so different. Compare for yourselves.  Here is the Budapest one played the other week (scroll down to track 8 ):

And this is the Sabine Meyer 4th movement – she is an amazing clarinettist:

I know which one I prefer.

Anyone got any other records they want to compare?

Meyer and friends are indeed very fine in these pieces. On the other hand this recording doesn't have the partita you mention but if you like Krommer's wind music (and how could you not? Wink) you must hear it:

The only version I have of the Krommer Octet/Nonet-Partita is Nash Enseble, including Anthony Pay and Peter Jenkin clarinets. I appear to have recorded it off ClassicFM one evening last year and noted the CD was CRD4310. I'll give it a listen again at the weekend.

Thanks for the suggestion, Ollie.

What I was trying to say was that when I first heard the work I was greatly impressed by it, and by the Meyer perfomance. It was the only recording I had heard.  For me this was the only way it sounded, and I wanted to share this with others.  So when R3 played another (IMHO poorer) version I was disappointed, even embarassed that I had suggested it, as others would wonder what all the fuss had been about.

Another point I was trying to make was that it is now fairly easy to quote the urls of musical extracts using Amazon & the like, so we could use them to compare performances and preferences. I haven't seen that done here (mind you I am not around here as much as I would like)

Hello Flay,

Yes we have used the url links to Amazon etc occasionally here, and also used urls to access soundclips for quiz questions. In addition we have a sendspace site which allows us to temporarily store complete movements/works for download/listening/comparion, mp3 or wav. There's a thread in the announcements section explaining access etc.

I will put some of the Nash Ensemble's recording of the Partita there later; like you, I only know one version.

Thanks, John. I am behind the times...

Silly question....: Are there any problems with copyright doing that, e.g. putting on a clip taken from a R3 broadcast or from a CD?

Can't you use something like 10% of the work for review purposes?

There is provision for quoting in reviews in print copyright but I don't know about music.

Thanks John, I hadn't heard the Nonet before (where was the Octet?)   Cheesy

I've put the Krommer I was on about on Sendspace to see if I can use it. It is very slow to upload isn't it?

....well it was here.....   Huh

Ignorant - then I'm in trouble, I've put on the full monty.  However it is only a poor quality bitrate

Boogler, I forgot to edit out the talk...

This version is generally too slow.  I will just have to buy the one I want

Maybe iTunes have it as a download of just the tracks I that want.  The Meyer is a bit of a swizz.  It is a double CD but the second disc appears to be her own compositions.
