i`m guilty that i ignored this symphony for a long time because of its numbering-i imagined it might be a dry run for bigger projects or defective in some way but this appears not to be the case (i`m listening to the Tintner recording)-
does anyone here know/like this piece?...the slow movement is incredibly beautiful and the whole piece sounds very fresh.

It's a much more mature work than its number would suggest!

It was actually composed after the Symphony no. 1,but discarded by its intensely self-critical composer. In think Bruckner knew he could compose a better symphony and was quite without the vanity which would want to see all his works valued and preserved. But his first four symphonies: the F minor, and nos.0,1 and 2, have a freshness and lightness he left behind in his later works.

I`m interested that you think Bruckner left behind a certain freshness and lightness in some of the later works-i haven`t got into no.1 yet but no.2 (in effect no.3 according to what you`re saying) is certainly a favourite of mine-Tintner is more persusaive here than Wand who i used to have.
