I'm now listening to Schnittke's viola concerto.  I like it.  For some reason, although I would never have counted myself as a Schnittke fan, I have quite a few recordings of his music in my collection, and when I think about it they all have elements that 'grab' me.  I do like the 3rd violin concerto especially.

Any thoughts on Schnittke?

Ah, the Viola Concerto is marvellous, isn't it?  Smiley

The Viola Concerto was played at last year's Proms. I remember it well - the Prommers shouted "Heave" and "Ho"  for the lifting of the lids of both the piano and the harpsichord.  Cheesy

It wasn't my cup of frappuccino (nor that of many of my neighbours in the Arena, IIRC).

I heard apocrophally that Schnittke was very prone to excessive lubrication before and during composition, and the (to my ears) perversity of some of the writing suggests a man staggering backed into a corner, incapable of the grace under pressure of dsch. If I'm missing something, I'm open to insights.

Schnittke wrote masterpieces (Fifth Symphony, Third Concerto Grosso, First Cello Concerto, Viola Concerto, Piano Quintet and especially his choral works) but he also wrote a lot of rubbish, mostly in his later years.

Well, that's my opinion. Wink

I like the second symphony, but partly because it doesn't really 'work'. It lumbers around, outstays its welcome a little and doesn't ever 'take off', but I still like it. I like the tango from the Faust cantata as well. But then I would, wouldn't I?

I love Schnittke's music, even the bits I don't particularly like!

Favourites include 2nd Quartet, 3rd Quartet, Piano Quintet, Concerto Grosso no 1, Symphony no 4.

Also like the Viola Concerto but can't say I "know" it. I've got a couple of recordings of it off R3 including the one by Yuri Bashmet from last year's proms.

I've also got large parts of the Schnittke weekend R3 broadcast in Jan 2001, though since I didn't have a hard disc recorder in those days I had to rely on what I could squeeze onto a minidisc - this means that some bits are missing eg end of first symphony.

Now that you mention it, he looks like Yuri Bashmet. Separated at Birth?

Do you know that bit in Giya Kancheli's 'Styx' where he honours the memory of Schnittke by having the choir sing: 'Schnitt-ke.... Al-fred... Schnitt-ke...' (http://www.sendspace.com/file/c01cro (2.05MB))?
It starts out with a nice viola solo played by... Yuri Bashmet...  Roll Eyes

First Symphony is a great work, and typically idiosyncratic of Schnittke. Have a listen if you don't know it yet. Chandos recording, I think.
