Right now, John White's Piano Sonata No. 7 (Jonathan Powell) from last year's 70th birthday celebrations.

The Tinsel Tonsils Agon, subject of discussion a short while ago, when the Craft on Naxos had seemed to me rather a gallop through the score. At the moment it's just over the Mac's loudspeakers, so final judgement on the sound quality will have to wait: however, as a performance, there's no doubt for me: it's far better paced than Craft's, and has much more lilt: another case in Stravinsky recordings where a slightly more relaxed tempo allows for greater incisiveness from the players and a greater clarity of rhythmic precision.

Rolf Hind's Messiaen - Regard no. 16 at the moment. One of the first Messiaen discs I bought. Still holds up well both as performances and a collection, I reckon.

Although I did just order the Loriod set of Gawks on Adès at an inflated but not ballooning price from across the waters. Anyone out there know it? Will I regret it?

This is on the way too:

Includes Gawks XV and X from what may be the old Pathé 78s.

I think I may be in a Messiaen phase again.

I was tempted by that one, ollie, but didn't like the postal charge. I feel sure it will turn up cheap here before too long, maybe in an HMV sale.

Buxtehude: Geistliche Kantaten / Konrad Junghanel, Cantus Cölln

I think I've posted this one here before, but ... it's good enough to merit a second go 'round.

Brilliant, brilliant recording by my absolute favourite early music ensemble.

Aaron, do they go in for the one-per-part approach? I really ought to search some of their recordings out.

Yes, they're exclusively a ovpp ensemble.  Their Bach motets recording would be a terrific place to start!

Their B minor mass is also very fine; their Bach cantatas disc (entitled 'Actus tragicus' with BWVs 4, 106, 196 and 12) is even better, I think. Don't know why they haven't recorded more Bach seeing they've performed so much - I suppose sharing a label with Herreweghe doesn't help.

And here's a picture of them.

And here's another.

There are however those among us who find their BWV 4 a little on the jaunty side.

My favourite BWV 4 is probably Parrott and co. That does also have aspects of jauntiness of course...

Oo, there goes my alarm reminding me that if I don't hot-foot it down the laundromat this minute some bastard is going to make off with my trousers again.

How many times can a pair of trousers be made off with?

Last night: Poul Ruders, Gong, Tundra, Symphony 'Himmelhoch jauchzend'. Noisy!

Perhaps Mr Sudden doth protest too much.

The term "Actus Tragicus" here only refers to BWV 106, yes? Are there others with this designation?

I cant find the Buxtehude disc on MDT....is it still available?

(I've ordered the Bach Motets though, I'm a sucker for an excuse to have another version!)
