Bach - some amusing canons which have outstayed their welcome a bit so I think the Musical Victim has to go on now.

Richard Barrett's knospend-gespaltener played by a Mr Carl Rosman. Absolutely astounding.

Rimsky-Korsakov Quintet in B flat major for piano, flute, clarinet, horn and bassoon. Surprised by the first movement allegro con brio which reminds me very strongly of Chick Corea style latin jazz, the flute line especially. The booklet notes quote RK as saying it is Beethovenian but anyone know if he made it to latin climes in his navy days ?

How did you find this piece, BobbyZ. It sounds interesting. If we had clarinet here we could play that. May be we can find clarinet player.

He certainly did, Bobby! In his very readable autobiography, 'My Musical Life', R-K recounts his time in the navy, especially a trip across to New York then down to Rio, returning to Europe at Cadiz in 1863-4.

The quintet is a delightful piece, with an especially catchy final movement.

Tonight it's the Strauss Four Last Songs (Berlin/Karajan/Tomowa-Sintow)

Congrats to Ollie for his 9 billionth post, btw.  Do you get some sort of plaque now that you've hit the star quota?

I saw an offer on the Hyperion Helios label in a brochure, 3 cd's for £15. The Rimsky was on one I selected coupled with the Glinka sextet for piano, string quartet and double bass. Helios CDH55173.

Thanks for the biog info IGI.

Lorraine Hunt Lieberson/Roger Vignoles perform Songs by Mahler, Handel & Peter Lieberson "Live" at the Wigmore Hall.

New Broadway cast recording of Sondheim's "Company"; ideal late night listening, along with a single malt.

I ordered the score of Rimsky-Korsakov's Quintet today. Thank you for finding it BobbyZ. And also many thanks for information about it. I did not know that R-K visited Americas, although I always knew that he was in the navy.
I see that it is Il Grande Inquisitor who really knows.
