The ties that bind

Playing that lovely rich score, Omar Kayyam by Bantock. I still cant believe why such a piece like this has been so neglected over the years, especially by such premiere festival like The three Choirs, The Prom or R3 indeed, generally.

Just put on that Walton/Hamlet and As you like it cd with ASMF & Marriner. Its certainly good to here Sir John Geilgud narrate that famous 'To Be or not to be' passage, in his own inimitable style. I still say he was one the best actors of shakespear ever.

Gosh, I've got that CD, not sure why I bought it originally, possibly as a result of reading a review of it, and it probably hasn't been spun for about 15 years. Might actually get round to playing it some time soon.

Penderecki's The Devils of Loudon (the DVD). It arrived in the post from Canada a few minutes ago. Very sensible packaging. No plastic DVD box, just the card wrap and paper insert for the box. The picture shows its vintage, despite some restoration, but so far the sound seems o.k, though it is mono.

So we still need a reissue of the audio recording!

Indeed. However, I would point out that, contrary to what the Amazon site claims, the Audio is 48k, 16bit LPCM mono, not Dolby Digital mono.

That's the one, from 1969. The image restoration is not that bad, but it does show its age.

I was a bit lucky. As the only bidder for a brand new copy on ebay, I got it for £8.17 including p&p from Canada.

Christopher Tye In Nomines
It's a time of the year thing. Just given my annual lecture on the Ferneyhough In Nomine (except that this year I threw in some extemporised comments on the employment of a Schubert quote at the end of some other bloke's orchestral work...) so that always leads me to violdom on the following day.

I got in touch with Philips/Universal a few months back and they said there are no plans to reissue the CDs, which appeared about a decade or so ago and were deleted soon afterwards.

But if you're really desperate there's a copy going for 129 euros (!!) at amazon.de:

There are more interesting issues in this series (Berg, Menotti, etc.). It would be impossible to do things like that on television nowadays.

Surely it is not that long ago that Berio's Outis was presented on television. It was shown, admittedly with severe technical glitches, a few times on ArtsWorld, before it became SkyArts. I have it on DVD-R somewhere, replete with the audio drop-outs and video glitches every 20 seconds. I will check, when I find it, but I think it was an Italian Television video production.

Hmm, Directed by Graham Vick for RAI, it was a La Scala production. I can find no date at the end (typical of Sky to chop that off the end) but it was made during Berio's lifetime as he is in the curtain call at the end.

[I guess it was probably the 1996 production.]

I used to think Schütz was at his excellent best with those big ensembles he uses in the Psalmen Davids and Symphoniae sacrae, but listening to this I'm not so sure.
