Back to basics:

(Different cover, though, and lower price, but same set.)

Good ol' #41 at the moment.

Having seen Evan's choice, though, I think that might be next.

It should be; these are delightful recordings, which arrived today in the post having been purchased for more or less $35 £18.  I'm now on to the "Prague"; the perfect music for pre-compositional colored-pencil drudgery on a beautiful Saturday afternoon.

Simeon ten Holt - Lemniscat - 4 pianos

There have been a few references to him on this board, but for those who don't know, he's a Dutch consonant "post-minimalist" born 1923 who used to compose rather more hard-assed stuff up to the 1970s. Refreshingly he doesn't sound like anyone you might imagine as an American or British counterpart. Several works of potentially serious length (this recording is c.150 minutes) often for c.4 pianos which will sound vacuous to some and engaging to others. Probably more effective in minor mode, such as in this piece. Incantatie IV is the most effective of his I've heard.

In the 1990s, an acquaintance of mine organised a performance of Lemniscaat by the pianist Kees Wieringa, in Schiedam Central Station (then called Schiedam - Rotterdam West). The performance went on for hours and hours, it was terribly cold (it was winter) and around midnight a homeless man came into the station with a blanket. He was very angry because he wanted to sleep in the station, as he usually did, but the music kept him awake. Cheesy

Calgija - Macedonian urban music. Involving a rather wonderful clarinettist - Tale Ognenovski.

Spinning earlier was this, which I was very pleased to find in my local record store, as it's far too long since I've listened to any of Māche's music:

NS:

Which is gorgeous.  Too gorgeous, really.  A bit like eating cream cakes on Good Friday. Shocked

Didn't realise it was out yet...have you been to our friends in Japan? Eager to hear you thoughts, especially on Luba Orgonasova.

I've never seen that one, opilec. What are those pieces like? I find Māche a bit mixed - some of the stuff he does with sampled sounds seems rather "anecdotal" and heavy-handed to me, but there are some extremely memorable things, like a piece for ensemble and tape called Kassandra which has if I remember correctly crumhorns turning into a swarm of bees at one point. I don't think it has ever come out on CD though.

I didn't move on from the Gagaku I was spinning earlier, but listened to all three CDs of that music I have in the collection. Followed by the Dunedin Consort's Matthäus-Passion. Hm. I'm still very impressed by this but the German pronunciation is a bit suspect here and there.

Omigod. He's arranged Mozart for 2 clarinets + drum. What a geezer.
