Thank you, IGI.     A real treat to savour with a late night single malt.   Smiley

NS

Symphonies of J.P.E Hartmann

A Dane. Interesting stuff. There's something to the idea of a 'Nordic' school, but I can't put my finger on it for the life of me.

I have the disc of 4 & 7, bbm, and was pleasantly surprised by the music, which seemed to me to contain elements of Brahms and Mendelssohn.

Spinning now, a disc of songs from RVW operas. I don't know Hugh the Drover, but the songs are most attractive.

Yes IGI, the music of Stanford is not generally played all that often, especially the Proms seem to neglect this composer amongst others to. Certainly Brahms was a major influence and Mendelssohnn to. Great composer from this country of ours from the pre-Elgar era. Roger Wright, come on chap!! Include some of this compsoers music in the Proms soon!!!

Brahms Piano concerto #1 in D m inor(Emil Gilels/BerlinerPhilharmoniker/Jochum). What a performance of this monster of a concerto. One of the best? If not the best?

Now spinning, full volume on me cordless headphones, singing along to Rachmaninov's Francesca da Rimini, a suitable dark, Gothic swirling piece for a dark afternoon with spine tingling bass profundo.  Wonderful!

It's a quote from the libretto (actually it's incorrect: it should be 'The soil is now ready for a new child').
I forget how much I enjoy this opera.
