Or should I be rephrasing this the other way around?

Anyways, for anyone who has ever heard Terry Riley live, perhaps he played in a similar mode (to what I heard) whereby he just used his left hand on the bass notes on one of his compositions.

There is a release by Keith Tippett - Friday The 13th - in which the opening 17" (of 47" total)  are entirely played in the bass notes.

Overall, Friday The 13th is an extraordinary experience; easily my favorite encounter with this member of Mujican: (jazzers Paul Dunmall, Tony Levin, Paul Rogers).

You can grab it gratis as a download if you are so inclined. Available on emusic...you get 25 freebies (unfortunately you do have to put up c.c. info) but you have 14 days to  bail out from the then-required subscription.

Bryn:

'circuit: a communications path...'

Purgatorio, yea, that sounds right.
