Below is the text of a post I put on Radio 3 MB a while back. As well as being very interested to hear your opinions, I would be grateful if those who find things on the internet so easily could possibly point me in the direction of a site through which I couldcontact or e-mail to find out what his future concert schedule is. I did come across a Sony site once, but have never found it again. I would dearly love to hear him play Rachmaninov No. 3, although I would probably not go flying off to distant places to do so!

"I would be very interested to hear your opinions on the playing of Arcadi Volodos.
One night I happened to turn to Classic FM (usually when I do this, I find that they are playing exactly the same piece they were playing the last time I turned on) to find that Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No. 3 had just started and I didn't recognise the playing. I thought it was a mesmerising performance and ordered the CD the next day. Until that point Vladimir Ashkenazy's performance with LSO and André Previn conducting had remained unassailable (and I have heard many different pianists playing it, the first time was by Jefim Bronfman), but Volodos now has preference."

Hello and welcome!

The Sony site is here - I don't know helpful it might be. There aren't any touring dates listed which seems a bit odd. But you can join a Volodos mailing list there.

http://www.volodos.com/

By the way, as far as finding things on the net goes: www.google.com is how most of us do it nowadays. It's sometimes scarily effective. Smiley

Thank you for the link which I'll look at later. I have tried to join the mailing list several times and my computer teacher has tried it too, but nothing has ever come back as a result - very puzzling.

I have Google as my home page, however, it's having to use magnification and voice (using Dolphin Supernova) that makes it a bit tricky! I use my one-eye-only peripheral vision as efficiently as possible!!

I am treating this thread like piano thread. Can anyone tell me about pianola?
Here is a link that I found on the other board. http://www.pianola.org/history/history_repertoire.cfm
I always thought that pianola is a piano that can play rolls made by famous pianists.

t-p, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Player_piano .

Pianola was/is a paricular type of player-piano. If you want to hear what player-pianos are capable of, try some Nancarrow studies. There is a five CD set of nearly all his studies for player-piano on the Wergo label, but rather better sounding recordings on the MDG label, recorded on a Bösendorfer-Ampico grand player-piano, are now up to volume 2, http://www.mdt.co.uk/MDTSite/pages/product/product.asp?prod=MDG6451403&affiliatecode=Froogle .

TP That piano roll page looks interesting.

I gave myself a severe talking-to this afternoon and have made a better effort to find out when Volodos is likely to be playing Rachmaninov 3 - I have accessed the Philharmonia's page, joined its forum and posted a request for information! It took a while though. I think I can find my way back to look for any answers. They seem to use a site similar to this one.

Imagine a little row of smiley things here. I'll have a go at them when I can move around here more easily.

SusanDoris

I was puzzled by the seeming disappearance off the radar of Volodos and found a blog entry with a similar question

 http://savecivilization.org/?p=93

One of the answers was from someone who had contacted Sony who more or less said they couldn't be bothered to put his concert appearances on their official Volodos site. Might be symptomatic of the state of the classical recording scene as far as the "major" labels are concerned. He might be better off at somewhere like Hyperion or Harmonia Mundi ?

BobbyZ, Thank you for posting the link. The whole thing seems to be mysterious. Why would they suppress information about Volodos? May be we will find out later.
I lived in America for many years and I heard Watts. I don't think I cared much for him, though he is a competent pianists. May be other people can write something about him. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ESbbciGELM

Bryn,
Thank you for your post. I heard of Nancarrow. Was he a recluse that wrote very difficult cannons that only machine could play. Or am I completely wrong? I remember reading that some composer wrote very difficult rhytms that noone could play. I did not know they have recordings of that. I thought it was not available.

SusanDoris, you can click on the smiley and they appear on the post. Alternatively you can get extra smiley from the Announcment board. Then you have to click with the left button of your mouth on a smiley's code.
English is not my native language, may be some one else will explain better.
You are learning fast I have to say.

Well, that is interesting - thank you, I will look at the link later. I am glad I am not as daft as I thought I was!

TP
I certainly would never have known that English was not your first language.

Thank you for that link which I have just listened to.
Simply as a matter of curiosity, can you tell from those video clips if he is short/tall? on the stoutish side?(!) good-looking? Even with magnification, my side vision is not enough to see!

SusanDoris,
I can not make up my mind about Volodos. I don't know how tall he is, but he is chubby and makes faces when he plays. His technical abilities are impressive. His hands are chubby too.

Susan Doris

Volodos surfaces ! There is a small feature on him in the April edition of BBC music magazine, "meeting the artists as they record". He has a new cd of Liszt on Sony. The first question asked is why he hasn't released a cd since 2003. He replies " I don't like any of my previous recordings. Artists shouldn't do cd's just like that, you should only do them if you have something to say musically. For a long time I didn't think that I did have something to say, which is why it took so long for me to decide what I was going to do for this recording." He later says to ask him in one year what he thinks of the new recording. He likes to record from 7 pm to 3 am and in one take with as few edits as possible.

The cd is reviewed seperately in the magazine and gets a four star rating, thinking it maybe a little detached to get the full five star.
