Radio 3 tomorrow night, apart from The Minotaur, is broadcasting a piece by one of our members, Stuart MacRae, Sleep at the Feet of Daphne, in a repeat from a 2002 Edinburgh Concert. There's also a performance of James MacMillan's second symphony.

Another chance to hear part of a concert given in the Usher Hall, for the 2002 Edinburgh International Festival. Ilan Volkov conducts the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra in music by two of Scotland's best known contemporary composers.
Duration: 45 minutes

Stuart MacRae: Sleep at the Feet of Daphne
James MacMillan: Symphony No 2

I don't normally listen to The Choir programme but I think I might do so today.

Aled Jones is joined in Paris by the director of Le Concert Spirituel, Herve Niquet, to celebrate the 350th anniversary of one of France's great choral composers, Michel-Richard de Lalande.

Featuring a complete performance of Lalande's Te Deum, and music from his contemporaries Lully, Charpentier and Desmarest.

Also, this could be interesting on Friday 6th:

Petroc Trelawny presents a performance given by the CBSO in Symphony Hall, Birmingham, featuring the premiere of Simon Holt's new percussion concerto, inspired by childhood memories of his great uncle, a one-legged taxidermist.

The programme also incorporates Russian music, with a centenary tribute to Rimsky-Korsakov as well as Rachmaninov's last orchestral work - the Symphonic Dances.

Shortish notice, but one for Reiner, amongst others, on TTN tonight:

1.00pm (Duration circa 4 hrs 10)
Musorgsky, Modest (1839-1881): Boris Godunov - Concert performance of Original 1868/69 version

Boris ...... Vladimir Kinjajev (bass baritone)
Feodor, Boris' son ..... Dubravka Zubovic (mezzo soprano)
Xenia, Boris' daughter ...... Branka Beretovac (soprano)
Pimen ...... Tomislav Neralic (bass)
Grigory/Dmitri the pretender ...... Aleksaj Proncev (tenor)
Marina Mniszek -daughter of the Sandomierz commander ...... Breda Kalef (mezzo soprano)
Holy Fool/Simpleton ...... Josip Novosel Yurodiviy (tenor)
Zagreb Radio Television Grand mixed Choir
Zagreb Philharmonic
Lovro von Matacic (conductor)

Since the conductor died in 1985, something of an archive recording.....

(And is the surname for the Fool's singer for real? I'll bet it's a carrying over of the character's name by accident - there seems to be a tenor Josip Novosel in a Monteverdi recording....)

The much praised ENO production of 'Punch & Judy', conducted by Edward Gardner, is being broadcast by R3 at 18.30 hrs on Saturday (21st June).

My mind reels when I realise that it is now 40 years since curiosity took me to the Drill Hall, off the Euston Road to see the first production - can't recall whether it came from Aldeburgh or the Orkney Festival.

In quick succession we've had a Saturday evening R3 broadcast of "The Minotaur", followed a week later by the BBC 2 transmission.   Last Saturday, we had a remarkable performance of Messiaen's 'Vignt Regards' in York and, as I write, I am now listening to a recording of the ENO 'Rosenkavalier' made as I attended Ian Pace's performance.     I say, again, things don't get better than this.

Just a note that La Fille du Regiment with Juan Diego Florez and Natalie Dessay is repeated again on BBC4 at 22.00 ( Friday 27th) and again  at 02.20am ( Saturday 28th) I love this performance, and happy to watch it again and again.

Performance on 3 this Friday evening, 27 June, a recent Wigmore Hall concert by the Hagen Quartet. It's all pretty good, as you would expect, but can I urge Janacek enthusiasts in particular not to miss a high voltage performance of his 'Kreutzer Sonata' Quartet No 1 in the middle. Stonkingly alarming and wonderful IMHO. One of those wandering-the-streets-afterwards-in-confused-daze occasions.

I do hope you aren't knocking the Wigmore Hall's admirable 'Bums on Seats' scheme, Mr Martle. It's the only way some of us can get in.

Runnicles conducts the BPO in Berlioz's Requiem on Wednesday 9th in Afternoon on 3 (why oh why do they insist on putting so much of the best stuff on when I'm at work?).

Also of note, a fair bit of Mackerras and Mozart. Figaro from Covent Garden is on Saturday evening, so I'll get to sample it before attending the following week. On Sunday at 8pm he conducts the Gran Partita with the Orchestra of St Lukes (by the looks of things this is his Telarc recording).

Tam Pollard. I used to find that to. So, with Sky+ you be able to record it, and then watch at your leisure. I recorded tons of programmes like this, also on Sky Arts, etc.
