Did anybody else catch this last week? I was out at a concert the night it was broadcast, but organised my timer to save it to my hard drive. I've only just got round to listening to it, and I'm rather impressed: it's not a strikingly individual voice, but he's a craftsman of the highest calibre and his influences are well digested rather than starkly identifiable, the cello part is very idiomatic and the overall structure very cohesive. Stunningly played by Truls Mørk with the Halle under Elder giving excellent support, it was also the best sounding BBC orchestral broadcast I've heard for some while. One for the archives, definitely...

Got to say Ron I thought it had a bit of a routine feel to it compared to the boldnes of his 'Desert' phase a while ago, but even routine McAbe is worth a lot more than some others at full tilt imho. I thought I caught a bit of neo-classical intent about the scheme of the thing, and I think that worked. How were the Max symphonies last week?

They're just sitting in the archives at the moment, mf: I'm still waiting for the Damascus Road moment when I can connect with them: it's obviously me, because I'm surrounded by people whose judgement I value, who hold them in high regard.

I feel similarly Ron-I think they need very simpatico performance to make the multiplicity of lines/ events cohere. Max seems to conduct and convey this very well, but I guess they need a name conductor to take them up. I think I've almost got the hang of the 1st Naxos quartet which I think may by default document how the symphonic approach is put together-but blimey, there are 9 more of them is it?

Try listening to the slow movement of the First, Ron, and thinking of it as a slow movement, with the lovely cello melody etc.

Idea just came to me now. Long shot, but it might work.
