I've just tuned in to this debate a little belatedly and with great interest.
Two things (at least) strike me.
Firstly, why is it that so many people take exception to the kind of language that someone like Ian Pace uses in trying to tease out these complex issues? Why do phrases like "arty-farty" and "politically correct" crop up at the jerk of a knee whenever the vocabulary is stretched beyond the everyday? Admittedly jargon can be repellent, but not all technical language is jargon and complex concepts often need complex language. Making an effort to comprehend the terminology prior to/in conjunction with comprehending the argument is surely the most intellectually responsible approach.
Secondly, reading so many lengthy and considered contributions from Ian, I wonder when he gets the time to practise the piano, let alone give concerts, teach, write music and articles? Is he human at all?
