Well...it was 1935

A quite beautifully restored version of Joseph Losey's 1979 film; each Act transferred on a separate DVD to sustain the quality.   The third DVD in the set looks promising:  Losey & Don Giovanni; About Don Giovanni; The Sound Odyssey1978-2006; 3 audio options: New 5.1 DTS 96/24-New Dolby Surround-Original Dolby Sound.

Ruggiero Raimondi as the philanderer; Jose van Dam (Leporello), Edda Moser (Donna Anna), Kiri te Kanawa (Donna Elvira), Teresa Berganza (Zerlina), Malcolm King (Mazetto) Kenneth Riegel (Don Ottavio) and John Macurdy (Il Commendatore).   Lorin Maazel conducts the Orchestra and Chorus of the Paris Opera.

Stunning cinematography by Gerry Fisher completes this fine tribute to W A Mozart and Lorenzo Da Ponte.

A pre-opening credit, depicts a prison cell with a scribbled wall inscription:

"The old dies and the new cannot see
            in the interim
A large diversity of morbid symptoms surges forth...

            Antonio Gramsci

I shopped around and hmv.online came up with the best deal, at under £15.

Hullo, Stanley

Ooh, it's a long time since I last saw this film.  I remember thinking that Berganza looked old enough to be Masetto's granny, bless her.  I also thought it wrong of Losey to imply that Don Giovanni lusted after young boys (there were lots of meaningful glances at the pageboy, if I recall).  Perhaps my memory has faded with time - might be worth another look at it.

The city is a process which always veers away from the form envisaged and desired, ... whose revenge upon its architects and planners undoes every dream of mastery. It is [also] one of the sites where Dasein is assigned the impossible task of putting right what can never be put right. - Rob Lapsley

Indeed!

Using a motto by Gramsci in a film is very, very 1970s.  Cheesy
