Now that Andrew Kennedy has graduated from the scheme, it seems we have a new tenor, Allan Clayton:

Not exactly inexperienced, it seems. Judging by his performance of the Britten Nocturne this afternoon, he's quite a find, and actually sings in recognisable English rather than Kennedy's
mannered, mangled singerese: really smooth-grained sweet head voice. I'm looking forward to hearing more. Hope you're catching this, Mary.

I did catch it, Ron - I just happened to notice it in the Radio Times, so I switched off the phone and listened. Very good performance of the very difficult Nocturne, I thought. It struck me as the perfect voice for Curlew River.

It does irritate me that these biographies never tell us how old people are. I'd love to know.

Hmm, this press release from his agent, http://www.ingpen.co.uk/newsstory.php?nid=68 seems to imply he joined the scheme last July.

He had then only just finished his post-grad study, so he can't be much more than mid-20s.

Mary, he's singing the lead in Albert Herring at glyndebourne this year...
