I see George attempted to start some discussion about a wonderful musician in the Place I Shall No Longer Mention and the thread was peremptorily closed.

Anyone want to talk about Janet Craxton here then?

I first became even remotely aware of her work through this disc, which I commend to all no longer on 3. It was sent to me by a certain CD journal, to whose readers I have already commended it (the website omits to quote my hope that there might be enough material for a volume 2 to follow). There are some very fine and hardly known pieces there but most importantly (to me) there's a musician with an extraordinary technique and a very forthright personality.

She was the oboist of the London Sinfonietta from 1969 until her death and her playing can be heard on quite a few of their recordings - including the Schoenberg recordings they made with David Atherton, of which the wind quintet may still be out there somewhere. Birtwistle dedicated his An Interrupted Endless Melody to her memory.

George I'm sure you must have seen her play since you seem to have seen everyone else. Anyone else have any recollections to share? I'd like to know a bit more about her since she seems too wonderful a player to be allowed to slip through the cracks.

Just to doff my cap and bend the knee to french frank who actually started the first Janet Craxton thread over on the other 'Music Matters' board which was going along very nicely indeed. It's still there but closed. I only started my one as a brief forlorn protest when f-f's was closed down.

I won't repeat my stuff from there except to say I was indeed a very great admirer of Janet Craxton's unshowy and deeply committed musicianship. A lovely player who meant a lot to my generation and I would certainly echo the remarks of the distinguished critic in International Record Review at the webpage that Ollie refers to.

Ah, that makes sense. I somehow couldn't imagine George posting a thread with the title Tom Service has the body of a Greek god without severe provocation...

I've got a lovely BBC LP of her playing various pieces including the Poulenc Sonata and Mozart Oboe Quartet - well worth tracking down.

A very different oboe disc:

Extraordinary - especially Ralph Richardson rapping in the Garden of Love...
