Monday 26 February 2007 22:30-23:00 (Radio 3)

A sequence of music with a featured performer leading the way. Violinist Maxim Vengerov begins tonight's programme with Bazzini's sprightly Ronde des Lutins.

Duration:
30 minutes

Artist Focus: Maxim Vengerov (1/4)
Maxim Vengerov
Since winning the Carl Flesch International Violin Competition in 1990 Maxim Vengerov's reputation as one of his generations most exciting and brilliant violinists has spread around the world. Whether performing as soloist in a large romantic concerto or in the more intimate surroundings or the recital stage, Vengerov's virtuosity is renowned, as is his constant search for new musical experiences, whether that's taking up the viola, conducting or learning to tango. In this week of Artist Focus we'll be highlighting some of the many roles of this unique talent.

I missed it, have it down in my 'listen again' list though, did anyone hear it and if so,was it good ?

I tuned in just a little too late last evening and only heard some monk chants and Honeger I think. It was very disappointing.

The 'monk chants' (actually Hildegard of Bingen) were very yummy, t-p! Vengerov played a brilliant frothy encore-piece.

I liked the music, but I expected to hear more of Vengerov. I love the chanting, but it belongs to early music show, not Vengerov in focus (or Vengerov out of focus). May be I am too much (too many lemons).

She is good too, Lord. But she was not the artist in focus.

I think I know in which way you think she's better, Lord B  Wink  Although she is indeed a super violinist (too).

Well, one does listen to the music on the radio, so I mean the noise she makes, though perhaps it is just that I prefer the pieces of music I have heard her play.

Vengerov is certainly playing the part of the modern vituoso, the showman fiddler. Just been reading the Sounds supplement in the Times.

He plays the 'Kreutzer' Strad, he uses Heifitz's bow, he has been playing Paganini since he was 5, he's learning the electric violin, his current tour involves him playing violin, viola and electric rock-violin and then he dances a tango. He charges the highest fees in the classical world today.

But he also performs in Uganda and Sudan for children. And he has recorded all the Mozart concertos with a youth orchestra.

Oh, and he plays the violin beautifully.

I think he is a good person. He played here in Limerick for charity. I don't know how he keeps his energy going.

I think the thing about him charging the highest fees in the world is his little joke (although it's true).  I heard a radio interview with him here in Moscow in which he mentioned this topic.  "People ask me - Maxim, are you the greatest violinist in the world? - and I answer and say -  No, but I am the most expensive!  Who is the best - this is a subjective matter, no-one can say.  But who earns the most?  Now that is objectively provable!"
