TTN's the one programme which tends to be forgotten or skipped over, so this seems like a good place to post a quick heads-up to anything that might otherwise be missed but might be worth setting a timer for. How about this for starters?

Thursday, 01.00: Mahler, Symphony No 8; Royal Concertgebouw, etc/Chailly

Ho!  I'm frequently awake at 4am and find TTN to be one of the best of R3 programmes.  The simple approach, letting the music speak for itself and lack of waffle makes for a fine programme.  That is what Radio3 should be about.   Sadly, too many other programmes now contain totally unnecessary chat with guests that are "not suitable for use" and there is a hint of the "lowest common denominator" on the distant horizon.
Cheers

  Damn it, Ron.   ANOTHER late night but Mahler 8, CGB and Chailly - a combination and a form indeed!          Bws, Stanley

Stanley! I thought you'd disappeared. It will no doubt need to be a time-shift job for me, since no doubt I'll have yet another plea for cover from some store or other...

And now I've just twigged that there's a week of Proms repeats on BBC4 even later into the night: the details are not listed in RT, but to make things as easy as possible for would-be catchers, here are the links;

http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcfour/listings/index.shtml?day=friday&service_id=4544

The Colin Davis Elgar 2 (Thurs a.m.)was particularly well received, though the Masur Shostakovich 7 (Sun a.m.)was strange enough to cause comments on the old board even as it was playing. Rachfan was very taken with the performance of The Bells, if I remember correctly (Weds a.m.). Hopefully they'll repeat the other broadcasts I was unable to catch at the time.....

The conductor/composer Eugene Goosens's works don't appear very often on R3, and I seem to remember that Mr Grew has registered his interest in them. Night owls and those with recording facilities might like to be aware that the Concertino for Double String Orchestra makes an appearance at 01:48 on Tuesday morning (SydneySO/Vernon Handley). There, Mr G, they've even found an appropriate orchestra to perform it for you. There are a couple of Proms repeats from 2006 next week as well, one by the RSNO/Deneve, the other Handel's Saul.

(It goes without saying, of course, that this is yet another stunning example of the left hand and the right being completely unaware of each others' actions, since at precisely the same time on BBC Four what do we find? You've guessed it: another week of repeats from the 2006 Proms, though not the same ones; pretty much a solid wodge of Mozart.)
