I see there's a thread on Least Favourite Instrument. How about something a bit more positive?

It doesn't have to be your always-favourite instrument of course. It can just be one that's doing a lot for you at the moment.

The Ondes Martenot is always near the top of my list...

If I really had to pick a favourite instrument, it would be the harp.

Bass clarinet.  Without a doubt.
Which reminds me mine is in serious need of a service quite soon.

On the other hand that means it's in rather good shape for your bass clarinet piece just now, aaron...  Wink

I don't mean to turn this into an Ollie-fest but I go weak at the knees over the bass clarinet too. Lovely creatures. In fact if I find any of the lower woodwind mewing pitifully at the window looking lost I can't resist bringing them in for a saucer of milk. The contrabassoon, the bass oboe (we don't see nearly enough of those) and the alto flute. Irresistible. I'll probably turn into one of those eccentric but harmless cat-women but with a house full of stray bass woodwind instruments instead.

(George, old chap, are you sure you're feeling quite well? Experimenting with the herbal teas again?)

My favourites tend to be woodwind - oboe (I love its plaintiveness) or cor anglais. I like bells - tubular bells, any bells really.

I would love to have a go on a contrabass clarinet. It's not often heard but, oddly enough, the best place to hear it on is on the old repeats of The Avengers on BBC4.

My favourites have always been the harp - and any percussion.

The voice, of course! But it does rather depend which voice.

And electric guitar, of course.

I like to hear any of the obscure instruments, probably because they are obscure. I would love to hear a recital featuring a heckelphone, bass oboe, bass and contrabass saxophone and bass flute, though not all playing at the same time. When Strauss's Alpensinfonie was played at the Proms and broadcast on BBC4 a couple of years ago, it was great to see the heckelphone amongst the woodwind. A pity it didn't have a solo.
