Great recordings of Henryk Szeryng in CD Masters this week!
If you are looking for something special, please look out for the recordings Szeryng made with the Dutch pianist Marinus Flipse. He was the most important accompanist of Szeryng in Europe after the war. Marinus studied with Alfred Cortot and he had a very interesting repertoire: Delius, Roussel, Markevitch and others. He also worked together with Willem Mengelberg.
Szeryng and Flipse haven't made a lot of records, but quite a few of their concerts were recorded by various radio corporations in Europe. Some of these recordings have been issued on LP. I have a beautiful performance of the Brahms op. 78 Sonata made by Austrian national radio at the Salzburg Festival in 1965. This performance was issued by RCA on a LP that also contains Flipse's performance of D'Indy's
Symphonie sur un chant montagnard français.
Marinus was the brother of Eduard Flipse, who was conductor of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra for many years. Eduard made the first recording of Mahler's Eight Symphony and one of the first recordings of the Sixth. Marinus also worked closely together with Jacques Thibaud from 1946 till the death of Thibaud in 1953. They gave concerts all around the world.
In the early 1990s a few recordings of Szeryng and Marinus Flipse were issued on CD. I hope that more recordings will be issued in the future, but I am afraid we have to wait a very long time for that. In the Netherlands only a few people are really interested in the great Dutch musicians from the past.
