IMPORTANT PRESS RELEASE

Date: April 1 2007
Originator: BBC Radio - Customer Relations Arts Programnmes
Subject: Excerpts and snippets

Radio 3 is pleased to announce that its excerpts and snippets policy will now be extended to cover presenters' links. Thanks to a powerful new algorithm, SATIE (Search And Transfer Information Expediously) Radio 3 is now able to transfer key words from presenters' scripts and present them as coherent excerpts.

Launching the new algorithm, Radio 3 Controller Roger Wright said: "Time is of the essence, my policy of replacing complete works with extracts has proved a huge success, so it is only natural that it should be extended from the playlist to presenters' scripts. By highlighting key words from the scripts, SATIE now means that we can present spoken excerpts between the musical excerpts."

SATIE works by searching a presenter's link, highlighting key words as block capitals and then presenting the highlighted words as an excerpt. For example:

"You are listening to RADIO THREE. It SAYS a lot about Sibelius that his 'Valse Triste'  is not the sort of piece that you'd hear at Viennese BALLS - judge for yourself in the next hour as we include parts of it in a selection that ranges from the baroque TO the late romantic. We're always keen to hear from LISTENERS, so why not e-mail us...."

Mr Wright went on: "I was afraid that SATIE might end up pear-shaped, but I'm delighted with the pithy, no-nonsense excerpts that it has generated. Obviously, the spoken as well as musical excerpts mean that Radio 3 shows will now be a lot shorter. The Breakfast Show, for example, will finish at 7.30am and I'll be using the extra time to broadcast complete performances of our most popular trailers."

Merely corroborative detail, intended to give artistic verisimilitude to an otherwise bald and unconvincing narrative.

IMPORTANT PRESS RELEASE  Page 2

Date: April 1 2007
Originator: BBC Radio - Customer Relations Arts Programnmes
Subject: Interactivity

Radio 3 is also delighted to announce two new audience interactivity initiatives: the first is LAMBERT (Listeners Announce Monday's Breakfast Excerpts on Radio Three): since it seems that we are unable to satisfy the majority of our listeners to our Breakfast Show, we've decided to let some of our sternest critics show us how it should be done: this Monday, the proceedings will be presented by Miss Carol Kohll.

The second of our initiatives is BUTLER (Boards Under the Tutelage of Listeners of Exceptional Reasonableness). It appears that the hosts of our new boards have similarly failed to satisfy our members' needs: henceforward we shall allow one of your number to set the daily agenda, and be responsible for all modding, with the power instantly to debar permanently any transgressors. We are therefore delighted that a Mr Mumblesford is the successful candidate, and are sure that you will all enjoy interacting with him on his chosen subject - Mozart.

It is time for us to admit that we may have made some errors of judgement in the recent past, but feel that these iniatives will help get us back on track.

We certainly have no intention that LAMBERT and BUTLER should go up in smoke.

Best wishes and happy listening,

Your Radio 3 team.

SATIE comes to Evenings on 3

"Good evening.

Well with the time at 7.04 and thirty two seconds it's time now for Performance Of Sorts On 3. But as most of YOU WILL be aware you GET more magic moments for your money on the new slimline radio 3, so we will kick off with a little hors d'ouevre of some organ music from Samuel SCHEIDT.
And from now on as I finish my introductions I will press a little button AND it will BE very exciting because people will start clapping WELL before I have finished my sentence, and it will be like you are there, skiing down the exhilerating PISTE of live broadcast. In fact I can't imagine you ever wanting to turn your radio OFF once it all begins."

Chain-Smoking Arts Correspondent, May Fayre-King sighs:

"News of the LAMBERT & BUTLER initiatives has alas been overshadowed by other developments on the Lambert & Butler front. Phil Tertipp, Grew Professor of Music at the University of Sydney, has today announced the discovery of the long-lost Constant Lambert opera 'Erewhon', based on the novel by Samuel Butler.

Professor Tertipp found the manuscript at the bottom of a filing cabinet in some offices on Park Drive, just off London's Old Holborn. 'This is an amazing discovery', he said. The opera has an interesting history and came about as a result of Constant Lambert's stormy friendship with Elizabeth Lutyens. One day Lambert said that he was going to see Elizabeth Lutyens 'and give 'er one!' The opera has a music hall feel to it, with cast members being referred to as 'Players'. Unfortunately it never had the run it deserved because theatre management refused to cough up and the opera was shelved. 'Nevertheless', Professor Tertipp said, 'it shows just how much of a Pioneer Lambert was, nobody could match him.'

Radio 3 Controller, Roger Wright, has announced that he is hoping to broacast the opera. 'However at 10 minutes', he said, 'it is far too long for the new schedules - so it will have to be broadcast as excerpts at fag ends of the schedule. However I will be ensuring that it gets the publicity it deserves and trailers are even now being made. I realise that many listeners find trailers a drag, but it is the only way we can give the opera some puff. As for trailers, I'm a 200 a day man myself'."
