Looks like an excellent first hour in tonight's Through the Night, to usher the snow in;

1.00am
The Archives of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra
Varèse, Edgard (1883-1965): Ionisation
Bruno Maderna (conductor)
1.08am
Bartok, Bela (1881-1945): Violin Concerto No 1
Yehudi Menuhin (violin)
Pierre Boulez (conductor)
1.29am
Beethoven, Ludwig van (1770-1827): Symphony No 8
Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra
Pierre Monteux (conductor)

Thanks for the reminder, Tantris, I had marked it in the Radio Times, but might easily have forgotten about it.

I've just listened to my recording - disappointingly, Ionisation seems to lack bite under Maderna, but Monteux certainly knew what he was doing with LvB's 8th.

A Monteux recording of the 8th was my introduction to the work on disc. I would have been around 14 at the time. Forget precisely which Orchestra it was. It was not the Boston though. San Francisco?

I haven't listened to the mp2 of last night's yet, but have high expectations.

Just listened to that 1962 recording of the 8th. Expectations entirely fulfilled. Smiley

Thanks for the tip, Tantris.  Smiley

I've started listening to archived TTN programmes via NRK Altid Klassik on the web. Anyone else do this? I find the sound quality to be even better than FM, and with the added bonus that you can navigate backwards and forwards as much (or as little) as you please. Very handy.

Alexander - do you have a link for NRK Altid Klassik, and do you know what bit-rate they are using for the webcast? (It must be high if it can rival FM).

It's 160kbps/48kHz, which I know doesn't seem extraordinary, but it certainly improves on the FM I get. (And moreover, one doesn't have to stay up into the wee hours to hear it.)

Here's the link:
http://www.nrk.no/alltidklassisk

Click on "Nettradio" on the left. A window not unlike the BBC Listen Again service will pop up. In the field marked "Søk etter program" type Notturno and click the grey box on the right of it; this will retrieve a few weeks' worth of Notturno (TTN) programmes to choose from. Once you've selected one, click "+++" where it says BANDBREDDE; this will give you the best quality audio stream.

To find what you want to hear, you will want to refer to the BBC Euroclassic Notturno schedule rather than the BBC TTN one, but it's all the same material:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio3/euroclassicnotturno/playlistindex.shtml

So, for example, if you wanted to hear the concert you posted in this thread, you would use this schedule:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio3/euroclassicnotturno/playlist070208.shtml

Of course, the continuity is in Norwegian, but it makes little difference if you have a schedule to hand.

Addendum: Incidentally, if you want to listen to Altid Klassik live, use this:
http://media.hiof.no/streams/m3u/nrk-alltid-klassisk-172.ogg.m3u

(A 172kbps OGG stream! And yet the Beeb will only give us 32kbps realaudio. Sad)

I think it's possible the NRK streams are now in MP3, so 160 kbps is really not bad. You can probably get similar things from Swedish Radio. I'm not sure that they've moved over to MP3 yet - they're probably at 96kbps in Real Audio format. The only problem I found with NRK in the past is that network congestion  sometimes breaks their streams up to a very disturbing extent.

Dave, yes, I found that to be the case with the live MP3 stream, too. Strangely, however, the archive broadcasts seem to be rock solid (so far, at least). And also, if I plug the live 172kbps OGG stream into JetAudio, that seems to be far more stable than the live Nettradio MP3 stream as well. I've no idea why.
