The tv establishment's two token sops to "elite culture" both venture into classical music territory next week with Tasmin Little featuring on the South Bank Show on Sunday and the Berlin Phil on Imagine... ( their dots not mine ) on Tuesday.

I thought the programme about the Berlin Phil was riveting, though people are being sniffy about it over at TOP. Today's reviews show that to non-specialists, musicians and people who like "classical" music are an alien species, really weird.

But still, this is telly. When you've got The Wire over on FX, you need a little bit more.
I'm not familiar with this channel. Do they have the Berlin Phil on it?

Um... They are musicians.

They are wonderful at being musicians, but rather rubbish at being people.
Oh good. You got there.

Oh I don't know. I think that both reviews highlighted the fact that musicians are normal, but that the Times regretted the fact that the documentary makers weren't encouraging them to slag off their fellow musicians for the benefit of the cameras.

I didn't see it so I should shut up now.

In a way they're two alien species. Alas they're far too often not the same people...  Sad

I thought the Trip to Asia film about the Berlin Phil could have been REALLY good, had the BBC shown the full original version (108 mins) - Yentob cut it down to an hour to fit his strand and I feel the narrative was destroyed because of it. A real shame as it was beautifully shot and captured some wonderful, genuine moments not really seen before.

I wonder what a Venn Diagram of Musicians, Instrumentalists, and People who Like CLassical Music would look like?

Tommy - thanks for the blog link and article.
