I note that Sky Arts are to run the Brandenburgs, as played by the decidedly HIPP Orchestra Mozart, directed by Claudio Abbado next week. Now that I have got the hang of recording 16:9 aspect ratio, I will have another go at capturing them.

Bryn, are those the performances one of which you posted a youtube link to some months ago? If so, I need to get ahold of 'em.

No problem, martle. I grabbed them a few months ago, but with the wrong aspect ratio. I will make sure to get it right this time. Your name will not be the only one on my list. Baz's is already there. With four broadcasts I should get at least one of them o.k.

Bach and Abbado does not sound a natural pairing. What was so interesting about these performances? I will certainly set the Sky+ to record them.
(Do you actually have to do anything special to record in 16:9? I just press the button and it happens!)

I will simply say that I found the Abbado directed performances hugely enjoyable. I will leave it to the Bach specialists to comment further. As to recording 16:9, my Pace Skydigibox has to be set up specifically to send out the whole width of 16:9, (in letterbox format), rather than just the middle section as 4:3. I have no manual for the box (I got if via ebay when my second Sony got stuck in standby) and had not discovered the solution at the time of the previous run of broadcasts of these Brandenburgs.

Thanks Bryn. I've just found the details of timings, etc on the SkyArts website:

http://www.skyarts.co.uk/SkyArts/Music/Article.aspx?artid=5365

I will certainly be interested to watch.

On the subject of Sky box settings, I've just got mine set to 16:9 on System Settings on the box and the TV set to Smart. That seems to allow it to cope with any ratio which comes up.

Descombes, re. the link, all you had to do was click on the blue "next week" in the initial message of this thread, but not the one in this message, which is not a link, just a bit of colour. Wink

Successfully grabbed this afternoon's broadcast, with the audio stream decoded from its mp2 codec to LPCM, rather than transcoded to Dolby Digita, and 16:9 letterbox for 4:3 screensl.

Just in case anyone took an earlier mention of Abbado's performance being 'HIPP' too seriously, I should point out that most of the instruments used are decidedly modern: rotary valved horns, piston valved trumpet, multiply keyed oboes, flute, etc. However, the strings appear to all be free from the addition of tuning adjusters on their tail pieces.

I love this concert recording from the Teatro Valli de Reggio Emilia last year.
