Not by any means the first time in history that private finance has been a major factor in the use of a Swiss orchestra by a foreign company, Bryn. Why do you think there were so many Ansermet/Suisse Romande recordings made by British Decca?  Wink

I wonder whether, in this case, the recordings didn't come first, and the search for a record company to issue them came somewhat later? The recording dates for symphonies 1 to 4 are 11/2004, 6/2005, 5/2006 and 9/2007 respectively.

Now that I look, Oehms seem to be continuing a Beethoven symphonies survey, but for 3 to 6 are using De Billy and the RSO Wien.

As the end topic of this thread is Beethoven's 5th, I wonder who wins the awards?

I have just had Roger Norrington, (rather bland and middle class I think) now I have switched to Furtwangler.  Far more driven, far more emotion.

When it comes to Eroica then it has to be Karajan for me, passion unbounded.

What do others think?
I'm going to confess that for me it's Furtwängler from the Titania-Palast, Berlin 1947. A pity about the lack of the repeat in the finale (at least I'm pretty sure it's missing, it's been a couple of weeks since I last heard it) but so it goes. It's a genuinely terrifying thing.

While we are talking about Beethoven, can I have peoples recommendations for Symphony No. 3, Eroica?   I seem to have Karajan (Berlin 1944) and Norrington (LCP) which disc seems to have gone walkabout  Huh and Zinman

It may be as un-HIP as the Queen Mother but everyone should have somewhere in the house:

Otto Klemperer   Philharmonia Orchestra   1956 (Mono) recording

Well said George but I'd go for Franz Bruggen and the Slough Symphonette. (the artists previously known as orch of the c18th)

And of course the 1959 stereo recording is pretty wonderful too.

At every one of these [classical] concerts in England you will find rows of weary people who are there, not because they really like classical music, but because they think they ought to like it. (Shaw, Don Juan in Hell)

Just gone and been and done it, the Klemperer, ordered from Amazon marketplace, £3, George and pw!!  I am really looking forward to how better it could be than the Karajan.

Buglared up me quotes again!!
