Dear Marts, you little blue eyed beauty, I cannot find the link I have lost and may be somewhere up Cader Idris with Gossamer Beyon!  You realise Mart, you are as twp as me?

I've never had Roger Norrington myself, but in this piece I am certainly not at all immune to the charms of

As the end topic of this thread is Beethoven's 5th, I wonder who wins the awards?

I have just had Roger Norrington, (rather bland and middle class I think) now I have switched to Furtwangler.  Far more driven, far more emotion.

When it comes to Eroica then it has to be Karajan for me, passion unbounded.

What do others think?

I reckon Furtwangler one of the most over-rated conductors of the 20th Century. Give me Toscanini any day. Now, which Norrington recording? That with the LCP, that with the Stuttgarters, or some other? Far preferable to any of Furtwangler's recordings I have heard, whichever.

Eagerly awaiting Antonini's with the kammerorchsterbasel, I'll settle for Immerseel or Mackerras (preferably with the SCO) for the moment.

And as for Karajan, he's the reason I only hold Furtwangler to be one of the most over-rated. Karajan Schwarzkopf and Legge, what a nasty little trio they made.

I guess it could all depend on his vibrato...

I can't sight-read the left hand, so what I can play is from memory.

Why don't you learn? It's not very hard to read the notes, and I'm sure there's help online somewhere. Of course, playing them well is another matter entirely  Smiley
Because I haven't got a piano  Smiley  Not in my house anyway.  The last lot of stuff I taught myself was before I left home, sadly, which is a good while ago.  Still when I get that nice big house and my pianola to hand...  Smiley

I do get good feedback about what I can play, to the point where friends often think I can actually play, but then they realise I have a repertoire of 2 Schubert waltzes [the bass clef translated from treble clef note by note and committed to memory!], the beginning of Moonlight and the beginning of Gymnopedie I  Grin

Sorry for late reply to Bryn, the Norrington was with the London Classical Players which I quite frankly thought was plodding and dull in the extreme.

Who was richard's picture of?

Was this a CD-R perhaps, with the wrong info on it? Plodding is not a word I can conceive of being applicable to Norrington's performances of Beethoven, especially in comparison to Furtwangler's.

It's a Kosher boxed set from Virgin Classics Bryn.

This Zurich Ochestra 5th have now put on is am absolute dream!  David Zinman conductor, suitably feverish and driven.

Should I investigate the John Elliott Gardner?

JEG is well worth investigating, Anty. We're really spoilt for choice, especially given recent releases, in relation to Beethoven symphonies. The Norrington LCP box remains very special, but then so is Mackerras and the SCO/Philharmonia, Abbado's Berlin cycle, Zinman, Immerseel (very good), Harnoncourt and Gardiner. An embarrassment of riches.

I would concur with IGI. Gardiner is well worth hearing, but would recommend Immerseel and Mackerras (SCO) as your next to taste. For Abbado and the Berliners, consider the DVDs, which can be found at reasonable prices at Amazon Marketplace. Don't let the variations in cover design fool you, the first four DVDs listed, (well 5 actually as the Eroica and Choral are in a 2 DVD package), are the ones to go for.

Yes, those Abbado DVDs, filmed in Rome, are superb and the basis for the recent CD set, rather than reissuing the performances given in Berlin (apart from the 9th, I think?)

Is the Antonini going to be a cycle, do we know? I also liked Manze's recording of the Eroica with the Helsingborg SO.

I am guessing so. 1 & 2 were issued on an Oehms hybrid SACD in 2005 and that disc was followed this year by 3 & 4 on a Sony hybrid SACD. Both pairs of recordings were sponsored or partly sponsored by Dorothea Herzog Spinnler and they share the same recording producer/editor in Andreas Werner. I certainly hope it continues to a survey of all 9. That would effectively make two Sony/BMG Beethoven symphony sets recorded with Swiss orchestras in recent years.

I don't know the details of the CD set, but the DVD 9th is from the Berlin Philharmonie, not Rome, as the other are.

[Ah, I see the CD set has Quasthoff, rather than Schulte.]

Yes, I'd forgotten that, Bryn. Stanley has the recent CD set, I seem to recall.
