Thanks for setting this one, Tommo.  Smiley Is it works based (loosely) on The Little Mermaid?

Zemlinsky – Die Seejungfrau
Dvorak – Rusalka
Tailleferre - La Petite Sirθne
Alyabiev – The Fisherman and the Mermaid

I don't know any Zemlinsky and look forward to catching up with the evening repeats of Composer of the Week; I see Die Seejungfrau is on tomorrow's programme.

Well that was quickly over!

Spot on IGI.  I didn't realise the Zemlinsky was on tomorrow - one of my fave works.

Lots of other clues we're in the pipeline.....

Menotti
Von Hallstrom
Novak
D Bates/J Lees

But I'll go research another.....

Well done!

Novak? Now that would be interesting. What little I've heard of Novak has been very good.

I know Granados composed a piano piece entitled The Mermaid too.

These four came to mind for a new one earlier today...

Handel
Martinů
Haydn
R Strauss

Re Zemlinsky, what's the Lyric Symphony like? I see a recent recording of it won one of the BBC Music Mag awards last week.

Oops!

Navok, not Novak!  Lior Navok is a young Czeck composer.

No heroes to the rescue here, unfortunately!

Let's see if another composer can help to unravel this one...

Handel
Martinů
Haydn
R Strauss
Monteverdi

Ariadne then!

Haydn: Ariadne auf Naxos
Strauss: Ariadne auf Naxos
Martinu: Ariadne
Handel: Ariadne and Porpora
Monteverdi: Ariadne

Correct! I was just about to add Goehr to the list, his Arianna being based on the libretto used by Monteverdi, of which the Lament is the only music from the opera to survive. I had a slightly different Handel:

Handel – Arianna in Creta
Martinů – Ariane
Haydn – Arianna a Naxos
R Strauss – Ariadne auf Naxos
Monteverdi - Lamento d'Arianna
Goehr – Arianna

Plenty of composers lined up to help in this connection. I wonder how many will be needed before the answer is uncovered?  Smiley

Cage
Ligeti
Gluck
Purcell
