What about euphonia, Richard ? (from Baritone horns and euphoniums)
Great argument for the use of the term 'tenor tuba'.

Or 'tube tenore' if you must.

Is there anyone out there who says timpano? I admit that in actual speech with actual people for me the word has become timp (when it's not Pauke or timbale). One timp, two timps.

I always thought it was "timpanum" (and I'm sure I've used that before, even if in error).

Fortunately plural cors anglais rarely cross my path.

I'm using both of my tympana right now! Wink

Not in this sense though.

Gamba? (One [viola da] gamba, two [viole da] gamba?)
Nah - one viola's enough, whichever type it is (viola joke, not very good and certainly not up to the exalted standard of Levine Andrade)...

Does anyone say cors anglais?
I prefer cors anglés, meself...

On the other hand I don't see any reason why consensus is necessarily always desirable...
Would you therefore prefer "consenses" or "consensi"? If the former, then I'll try to con to my senses and shut up...

Best,

Alistair

The plural of Pace

Speaking of pace, the plural of faux pas is of course faux pas.

Any nice example of right recursion deserves a round of applause from this member anyway.

I did once manage to get the sentence 'A Pole is a Pole is a Pole' into the pages of the Musical Times (in a review of Polish music which I also convinced the editor to run under the headline 'Eastenders'!) ... Smiley

Anyone remember Frank Muir's story on 'My Word' which ended with a puzzled message left by Caesar's wife for her gardener: "0ur roses arose. Is a row Cicero's?"
