In the dim and distant past, one of my teachers advised me, sagely, "neither a borrower nor a lender be". Time has proven the wisdom of that particular saw. Being something of a craftsperson (more enthusiasm than skill, I fear) I have a collection of tools which are now guarded jealously. Chiddler came to me a few days ago and asked if he could borrow a screwdriver while I was busy. Quick rummage in the toolbox and out comes a chisel Shocked; "this would do".

Since my smoothing plane still bears the traces of his last borrowing (it doesn't smooth any more, but is good for making mouldings) I made haste to redirect his attention towards the small kit which I use for torturing electronics, where he found a screwdriver, then made haste to put a lock on the toolbox.

Previous victims include:
  • a rusty saw with broken teeth
  • a rusty hammer which nearly killed the lawnmower
  • a hand drill which lost its handle in mysterious circumstances
  • a whetstone which is now a collection of whetstones

Still, good thing that's a saw we can all borrow isn't it? Wink

I think we've all learnt that lesson the hard way...

To avoid forgetting who I have lent CDs to, I've actually added a column to my CD database that says: "on loan to"...

I did get one of my lent CDs back on Friday which was excellent (only another 6 to get back now but I do know who has them all)   Wink

That's all very well until it transpires that while you thought that you were lending the CD/cassette/book, the other party believed that you were giving it to them.

I think you need to get a solicitor to check over the wording of your loan contracts, hh. Possibly a bit of unnecessary lack of clarity there. Wink

Actually for me there's also a rather lovely lack of clarity in hh's post... Wink

"neither a borrower nor a lender be"

That was indeed a favourite of Owld Ma Wessel. ' A sage much missed ' (now try and say that when your sober).

Naughty, Ollie Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

Either way, there is still unclarity about whether there is a reasonable expectation of getting it back.

Actually, you know how you put 6d in Christmas Puddings?

Well, Ollie, did you have a very shortsighted Giant round as cook last Christmas?
