I had two panels with an applications menu at the top and workspaces at the bottom. I don't know what happened to either of them, but hopefully somebody will help me out.

No, I'm not a complete idiot. I'm only a halfwit. In fact I'm actually a catfish.

I hate lost toolbars. I used to have the top couple of lines on any MS Word screen specially set up in a way I liked them, but they disappeared one day and could I get them back? Huh

I'd forgotten about it till you mentioned that actually. I just plough on without them these days.

Alas.  Have you upgraded to the latest version of MSO?  Everything seems to be quite unrecognisable.

Also: I found my Barthes, thank heaven to gods.

I have Office XP. I haven't changed versions for about 3 years: are you talking about something more recent?

But the problem I mentioned was quite a few years ago now - I think it was back on my previous laptop. I'm not sure I've ever tried to customise the toolbars in Word on this one.

I saw Office Vista when I was down at Durham the other day. Horrible. I was looking for 'Save' and couldn't find it, and when I did I realised I was actually looking for 'Save As' and ended up losing what I'd done.
I really dislike this idea that everything you want to do should be replaced by icons. I prefer drop-down menus because when you scroll through them you can actually see what choices you have. If there are a lot of icons, I find I have to run my pointer over them to see what text comes up. Sometimes you want to do something with the formatting that you've not done before so how do you know what the icon's going to look like?
