It's 4.50am and I am troubled by thoughts:

Is it possible that marmalade is actually an outmoded form for which marmaload would be more current?

Her toast was marmaladen?
She marmaloaded another slice?

Am I hopelessly marmalost?

Whether that's right or not, I like it very much! I thought perhaps marmalade meant something (oranges!) squished up, bashed, and that the verb to marmalade, meaning to bash came first, but apparently the word comes from Portuguese marmelo, a quince.

That quotation from L'enfant is very interesting.

We have often vaguely wondered about Marmaladoff in Crime and Punishment, but never seen an explanation. Was the name Dostoyeffsky's idea of a jape, or is it somehow serious?

'Marmaladen': The fate of being weighed down by crushed quinces. (Almost as bad as poor old Sisyphus.)

Someone ask for some etymology?

(According to the OED...) from the portuguese word for quince, marmelo, for quince marmalade for which the term "marmelada" was first use.  The dictionary provides a rather lengthy commentary on what exact type of quince the Portuguese were talking about, and the associations that it might have with other words, but that is not too relevant.

...sorry...

Bother! said Pooh as he chambered another round.

Now I shall have to go and look up Greek mythology again to see whether it really was a giant quince. And perhaps I should check the stories surrounding Hercules in case (predictably) I am getting confused again.

People love government paid-for education here in Ireland.  But the universities want to introduce fees.  And so you have campaigners saying that they want to keep "free fees".  Seriously: it's their term of choice when talking about the issue.

Since this is a music board, does anyone have anything to say about the music of Burma?

Isn't it a radio station board?

But seriously, what the hell is 'time-is-now' about?  Huh

I think you'll find that is 'time_is_now', actually.
