Samantha has to go now to see a violinist friend of hers. She’s written him a fiendishly difficult concerto, and it’s causing them both a lot of frustration. She spends all her time desperate to get what she wants to come out of his instrument, whilst he’s busy trying to get his fingers to master her sticky passages. Gum shoes are called by that name because they stick in the mud like gum.

I wanted to know why her name was Lola. But then his mum told me she'd been a showgirl, back in the old days you know, when Morse was still Morse and Lewis was a mere downtrodden Sergeant. Then there was a brief interim in which you could get cucumbers for ready money, but since then it's been an uphill struggle all the way to the bank.

Nobody talks any sense any more. If they did, we'd understand it.

We did spend some time searching for his marbles, but I fear they're gone for good....

...Turgid van Hire? Not the Dutch symphonist, famous for his cycle of two - the Uni, and the Tandem?
