I sometimes think I'm eccentric, but I guess I probably have more in common with more people than the media-picture suggests.

I don't have a car, a driving licence,a passport,a credit card, a mobile phone, a T-shirt or a pair of jeams, or digital Tv  .

I don't go out in the evenings, nor on holiday, except day trips, nor to sporting events nor to pubs or restaurants with friends.

Yet I am quite contented. What can be wrong with me,I wonder?

Smittims,

Nothing.  Eccentricity is from the inside.

Or is that concentricity?

You're going to have to go digital eventually you know.....

You don't have much of a social life then?  Or....do you have a houseful of your friends all the time?  Why don't you like going abroad to explore and enjoy foreign climes?  Have you never been out of this country?

Nothing if that's how you like to be.  Undecided

I think you are absolutely right there. Most people I know live a fairly quiet life, but because journalists (by nature, I suspect, a rather extrovert breed on the whole) are the people who give us our media images, the picture is a bit distorted. We get a false vision of the "norm", and there is far too much pressure, esp. on the young, to conform.

I don't have a car or driving licence, as I said, but that used to be considered quite normal. I don't have any jeans either, smittims - older people look pretty silly in jeans. I only go out in the evenings because I have to in order to go to concerts and theatres. I wouldn't dream of going to any sporting event. Have to admit I have/do all the other things smittims mentions, though!

If there is a lot going on in your head there is no need to be constantly "doing".

Classical music isn't considered in any way eccentric by my family or friends, but even if it were, I wouldn't give a damn.

I have jeans in every colour.  Undecided  I've just popped in to have another look at myself in the mirror because I'm wearing  bright pink jeans and a black "dress" top (like a mini-dress) with Oriental flowers on it and pink wedge sandals.  Oh dear.... Sad

I'm going for lunch today with my best friend from school and I must admit she dresses very differently from me even though she's nearly a year younger.  She always wears floaty black stuff and wide-legged trousers - I think she thinks black is more slimming.

To hell with it!! I feel good even if I look stupid.  Grin  (What were we saying about eccentric?  Roll Eyes)

Thanks for these replies.

Milly, I don't think I have any social life, and although I once went to Belgium and Nederland over 40 years ago,I've not been further than  Glasgow or Cornwall since and only twice off Great Britain  ,to the Isle of Wight.

I think it's because I'm easily bored and so often wish I was doing something  of my own choice.I've always believed in simplifying life and concentrating on the things that  are important.

It seems to me that  many people spend  huge amounts of money on cars which sit unused for most of the 24 hours,or on houses which they leave unoccupied very often.

Could be.

For myself, I lease my car then change it for a new one every 3 years.  I do use it every day.  My house is never left unoccupied even when I'm on holiday because I always get other members of the family to move in when I'm away.  I have a credit card but I always pay that off monthly so there's no interest, it's just handy for buying tickets over the 'phone etc.  I've travelled extensively and I do enjoy holidays abroad.  My friends are hugely important to me and we provide a very secure network for each other in times of stress.

Having said all that, I don't mind being alone sometimes - in fact I enjoy it.  I put that down to having been an only child whose parents worked full time so I spent enormous spells of my childhood on my own and this was never a problem.

Each to their own Smittims.  If you are happy with your way of life what right would anyone have to criticise?  :-)

Smits, the fact that you have made sane personal choices about how you wish to lead your life could only really cause you to be termed as 'eccentric' by those who have been seduced by media manipulation into following the conformity of the lowest common denominator. You have no intention of trying to be an eccentric, you are simply being true to yourself and your beliefs, which is surely admirable. I find far less to admire in those who seek to assume 'eccentricity' in the vain hope that it will make them appear interesting to others; that is surely as self-deluding as the belief that appearing on a reality TV show will instantly confer 'celebrity'.

Thank you for sharing this, smittims!

I don't have a car, a driving licence,a passport,a credit card, a mobile phone, a T-shirt or a pair of jeams, or digital Tv  .

I don't go out in the evenings, nor on holiday, except day trips, nor to sporting events nor to pubs or restaurants with friends.

I don't have a car myself. I don't even know how to drive. I don't have a passport, but I do have an European Identity Card (obligatory in the Netherlands), I don't have a credit card, I do have a mobile phone but I almost never use it, I do have T-shirts and jeans but I don't have digital TV. I like to watch DVDs but I prefer to use my computer for that.

I once went to Belgium and Nederland over 40 years ago

Al least you have seen the most important part of the world! Wink

I agree with you on travelling: I don't like it at all.

All good sense from Ron in #37.

Milly - I'm sure you look fine in jeans! You're much younger than I am. My prejudice against them is the material rather than the shape (I do wear trousers) - I don't like denim.

People tell me I'm faintly eccentric, whatever that means...?

I suppose it means I listen to R3, write messages on a messageboard, subscribe to Greenpeace, Amnesty, Cornwall wildlife trust, Oxfam, Minack Theatre, IMS Prussia Cove, St. Endellion Festival and the Monteverdi Society.
I'm in a wild and sexy relationship with a gorgeous man 17 years older than me....he's 73 ! Our campervan is decked out with silk cushions, a solar powered crystal(see below), and 3 joss stick burners.

My home is held up by piles of classical CDs, I watch about 15mins of TV a month.I wear wacky shorts and sometimes jeans, I ride my bike all over the place.

Eccentric?  Moi?
