At every one of these [classical] concerts in England you will find rows of weary people who are there, not because they really like classical music, but because they think they ought to like it. (Shaw, Don Juan in Hell)

Sitting outside a pub in Chelsea I had watched a bewildered young, ginger furred animal (not a rat) work its way along hedges until it ended up in the middle of the road, where it then stood stock still.

Or one of these?

I'm not sure if I could pick him out of a lineup, but I think this is the fella that used to turn up in bathtubs quite a lot when I lived in Blighty. I'm not who got the worse shock; me seeing him waiting for a hot soak, or him seeing me without my liberty bodice!

Sitting outside a pub in Chelsea
Why on earth would you do that?

I had watched a bewildered young, ginger furred animal (not a rat) work its way along hedges until it ended up in the middle of the road, where it then stood stock still. Terrified probably.

I think perhaps you should qualify the term 'terrified' here. Do you have rather more detailed evidence that the creature was 'struck with terror'? In these situations, knee-jerk emotive ascription can be less than helpful.

There was a lot of traffic and I could see it was going to get squished.
Pure conjecture on your part. Evidence??

I went out and coaxed it back onto the pavement where it promptly disappeared into the bushes.
You rather lazily assume that its having returned to the pavement has a direct causal relationship with your attmepts at 'coaxing'. Any proof that such attempts on your part with gingery creatures has been effective in the past? No. I thought not.

Well, 'dear old', used in a manifestly ironic manner, may be taken as symptomatic of... ....

Awwww.... Laa-laa the baby monkey!  A friend and I went to London Zoo specially to see her!

(That breed of monkey turns black with age - we managed to catch her while she still looked like a Teletubby.)

Good morning all!  It's only 1.51 a.m. but I'm sure you're all up and about.  Some of us are working you know - middle of the night being the only time we have the peace and quiet to be able to think straight.

I have post (which mustn't be posted), a stack of filing, various lists of things to do to compile - but I digress.......must get on!  Roll Eyes
