When in doubt, wash.

« on: 20:58:22, 29-08-2007 »

My 12 year old's been overdoing the practising and has developed blisters on his index and middle fingers. He can rest his fingers tomorrow but he and his 14 year old brother and their friend are playing at friend's mother's wedding on Saturday evening. I'm afraid these blisters will burst and he'll be in agony. Any suggestions to avoid this?

Plasters?

I used to get similar blisters from playing the guitar - or painful fingers on my left hand.

If you rest your fingers, it's normally ok to play the next day and they shouldn't be too bad, and eventually, of course, one's fingers turn to leather and the problem is forgotten.

In terms of maybe making them feel better, I have a cream from boots which bizzarely is for sore feet but works very well for soothing guitarist's aching finger-tips, maybe you have something similar?

Thanks sam. Long term, I expect my boy L's fingers will toughen up - as have his brother D's hands. D had awful drumming blisters but his hands eventually toughened up. I am just hoping that L's fingers survive Saturday!

What is the name of the cream from Boots? I think it's OK to name products on this board.

You can get very thin Micropore dressing from pharmacies. It's a bit like a sticky plaster but much thinner, so when he plays he will still feel the strings almost like normal, but with added protection. Unlike ordinary plasters it doesn't come off when you play, and you can wrap it round individual fingers in most directions. Hope that helps.

Of course, too much practice is not good. When the fingers hurt, practise with the mind, not the fingers. You'd be amazed how effective it can be to practise rhythmic patterns without the instrument, and sing the melodic patterns, or the intervals slowly. When you come back to the instrument, you may well have improved. I call this technique Armchair Practice, and it's not as stupid as it sounds.

I'll have a look for this, Martin.

He doesn't normally overdo it but his brother's only just invited him to join them for Saturday's gig so he's been working extra hard learning it all. I've told him not to play at all tomorrow.

Thanks for replying.

hi...

it is "boot's mediterranean olive almond & sage wonderbalm, with organic extracts of softening olive oil, nourishing almond oil & fragrant sage oil"
but i think it comes in other "flavours" too...

Thanks - sounds delicious! He's already tried some cocoa butter (which I find is excellent for dry skin) - not sure how the blisters are today as he's not back yet from a day out on the beach - brrrr!

L's now practising with the rest of the band, his fingers wrapped in Micropore. When I left him an hour ago he was managing fine. Many thanks for that suggestion, Martin.

I've also bought some Germolene New Skin but we've not tried that yet.

You're very welcome, MJ. It's a better remedy than my old school friend had for the same problem - he played with gloves on.  Smiley

Whereas I just sounded like I was playing with gloves on.  Grin
