Indeed! (Me too.) It's enough to make you go off and find out that assist = ad- + sistere (Lat. 'stand').

You do indeed learn something new every day. I can't quite remember what I learnt yesterday, but ... um, well ... I'm sure it's in there somewhere. Undecided

Well the French POST use assister to denote attendance at a concert rather than necessarily helping out in any way. Confusing for beginners.
