After "no music day" this week, there's a new bit of penitance you may care to join - "Buy Nothing Day", which is tomorrow.

Will you be buying nothing tomorrow?  Smiley

I try to buy nothing as often as possible. And whenever possible, I buy it locally. I also do nothing sometimes. But I don't noth as well as I used to since my knees started to deteriorate.

I was thinking about this more actively recently.  I haven't stoked up, so don't know if I'll be able do it.  I'd like to spend a whole week without purchasing (or purloining) anything of monetary value.  Would take some preparation though!

Doesn't it rather lose its point if you manage to do it simply by 'stocking up' in advance? (That's a genuine question: maybe I've missed the point.)

I actually didn't know anything about this day. I do like the idea of encouraging people to find some space in their lives away from commercialism, though I don't myself feel the need to devote a day to finding such a space, since I quite regularly have days when I buy nothing. As it happens I will need to buy a couple of things tomorrow, as it's the only chance I'll have to get some household stuff I really should have bought this week and haven't had chance. I suppose there would be an argument for having made more of an effort to do that today in order to be able to show solidarity tomorrow, if I'd known about it.

Is this sort of thing widely publicised (or publicised at all) in Russia, Reiner? I think ultimately I'm probably inclined to see these 'international X [or no X] days' as part of the very globalising, administered-life trends they seek to buck.

I haven't seen hide nor hair of it here, tinners!   But I believe it is being promoted more strongly in the less conservative areas of the USA (who actually began it on 23rd Feb).   In fact the Moscow Millionaire's Show is on this weekend, I saw on tv - an odious spectacle of the most vulgar kind of consumption (including a diamond-encrusted BMW).

I managed to get 'flu while trudging around in the rain last week, so I am staying indoors tomorrow with a dose of Theraflu, away from commercial temptation. I shall make sure I buy nothing on-line either, though Wink

Reiner, You are right and there is no safe heaven from shopping even in the house.

Russians are new to the game and they want to catch up with every body, but in the ugliest way possible.

I know many people that live to shop. They have all their excitement chasing new gadgets.
I can not say that idea of going through shopping plaza for relaxation on Saturday doesn't appeal to me.
I think it is a good idea to have whole of no shopping (I don't cound shopping for food).
There are people that going for shopping trips to Paris or New York (may be to London too).

Erm; how else am I to feed myself for a whole week?  (I could grow a veggie garden, but that would require more planning *still*).

There's a big difference between opt-in globalism, and consumerism I think (well, they might have common fadistic qualities, but as they say, "economical ideologies come and go, but fads are forever").  What would you rather in place of this day, t_i_n?

Can I visit charity shops tomorrow? I haven't been down our High Street in weeks and when that happens I usually find some gems of CDs/LPs in the charity shops  Smiley

I don't think it's going to be *enforced* where you are, John.
