Actually Ron I was making a bemused comment on how you chose to spell "whackiest."  Maybe it gets lost in translation.  I always thought that off-the-wall, eccentric and fun-loving people were "wacky" (the superlative being "wackiest") whereas "to whack" means to strike or hit.

Cripes. I'm glad I saw your reply before I posted what I was about to, strina! I thought you were referring to something else, which was why you quietly passed it over to Tommo Embarrassed  Oh, the perils of language! Grin

Thank you Ron Dogh,

Now I understand. I thought that strinasacchi is an English lady.

I kind of know what she means. This expression was often used when I was there. I don't need an explanation.

Thank you once again.

And of course, the other obviously 'whacky' British city is Liverpool.

For three reasons.  Wink

Naughty step, Mort. Cheesy

A slap "upside the head" was nonetheless a new one on me too. You learn something new every day here although, tantalisingly, Mr Google doesn't provide precise information about the action involved. I intend to interpret as one of those upward cuffs to the back of the head that Mr "Connie" Francis, one of our history teachers used to dish out, probably illegally.

I was going to mention the 'Glasgow Kiss' but in the interests of Anglo-Caledonian relations perhaps I'll desist. I wouldn't want to earn a St Albans Stinger.

Wasn't "upside" a Turfism? Somewhere in the Poetry Appreciation thread as a translation from German IIRC.

There is nothing better than talk to native people.
When in Rome do as Romans do.
