Not sure whether to put this in the Happy Room or here, but I've got something else to be happy about too so maybe will put this one here to counterbalance the grumps ... Flatmate got wireless broadband set up in the flat before Christmas, which I've been half-wanting, half-not-wanting for ages (means I can log on from my laptop, which is convenient, but also possibly slightly too tempting ...). After a couple of failed attempts to get on to an Internet browser from my laptop I finally decided to try a bit harder last night, re-ran the Tiscali CD thing which seemed to improve the signal strength but still ran into the same problem when I actually tried to open Internet Explorer. After battling with it for an hour or so flatmate gave me the Tiscali helpline number and said 'Why don't you call them tomorrow?' It didn't have any opening/closing times on it so I thought I'd give it a shot straight away (this was around midnight last night) rather than waiting till today. Was on hold for less than a minute and got a nice Indian lady who knew exactly what the problem was, told me how to fix it (just had to tick 'Never dial a connection' in Internet Options: apparently my browser was still trying to dial up), and I was online by 1 o'clock!

Well done tinners and Tiscali. Well, after my disappointment with the wireless keyboard/mouse (manftr. Trust) yesterday I've had a much more satisfying day with the monitor (manftr. Hewlett Packard). Following the instructions that were cellotaped to the screen, I just disconnected the old one, connected the new one, switched on the computer and wow a 19" diagonal screen in bright colours. I've changed the screen resolution for a better arrangement of webpages images etc. So, looking good. Some things work OK! Also good start up with the new speakers (manftr. Trust) which are 25W RMS with a woofer. Playing wav files and internet radio is soooo much better experience now. And the new microphone/headphone unit is working fine too (had to get a new one as the old set-up was controlled through the old speakers). I do, though, now have to select playback device when I want to use the headphones but that will be rare, Everything looks so nice now with the new screen, but Explorer still freezes every so often John W

For a while, yes, but it doesn't actually sort the problems I have with the PC

Hate my work computer at the moment - it still has a New Year's hangover and won't let me log in remotely...

Slow is the last word I`d use, Mart and, no, it`s not just you. It seems to have been down since about 11 this morning. I haven`t been able to log on at all Bluddy technology. I`m hoping we`ll find out what happened. The myForum sites have been rather erratic recently.

One thing I've recently downloaded and want to recommend to all of you use PCs/Windows, is the full Windows Live Package ( http://get.live.com - totally free), in particular for the new version of Windows Live Mail, which allows you to co-ordinate all your various different e-mail servers neatly (including hotmail ones). Highly recommended (and no, they aren't paying me to say this).

I've always used the Turnpike software for my e-mail (only because itcame with the Demon website account I opened 10years ago). Not sure if Windows live could be configured to collect the @demon mail. I've also got a btinternet address which I am able to re-direct to the Demon account.

I'm pretty positive you could have all of those set up with Windows Live Mail, John, and separate In/Outboxes, etc., for each of them. All you need is the e-mail address, password, details of incoming and outgoing server.

Thanks Ian, I might look into it as Norton seems to disrupt a lot of my outgoing mail and I have to send it again Meanwhile. Update! Put off by the wireless keyboard/mouse system that failed (or I failed to enliven it) so I just opted for the 'wired' units off the Tesco shelf (Technika, I use their memory sticks) and more happiness, just plug-in-and-play like, and the keyboard has little lights to indicate the previously nuisance unaware capslock, numlock, oh and scroll lock (what the heck is scroll lock?) So the place is now looking more silver/black in here than ever now, what with PC stuff, audio stuff, cameras, laptop (oh, the Roberts DAB has a bit of wood-effect), it all kind of matches my hair though the silver bits are looking a bit WHITE now I am easy pleased with new stuff Hi ho and a jolly time to all you surfwide'n interwebber lopers. Keytypelo and mousy noball aroley giving so verily happynesty and all deep joy and thorkus for great laugh'n tittery. O yes.

So the place is now looking more silver/black
I think I must have acid fingers because I have been through two black keyboards and the letters just melt away. I have had to change to one of my old black keyboards (which is now totally blank except for the numbers, and q, z, x, p and v) because I had an accident with some toast on my transparent back-lit keyboard. Trouble is, it is so difficult to buy a grey keyboard now. Luckily I can touch type without looking at the keyboard. Does anyone else have this problem with black keyboards?
