The key to the left of my 1 does ` either on its own or over vowels, ~ and Ÿ. Back on the subject of the letters/symbols melting off one's keys - I've just perused my keyboard and noticed that the "c" and "n" are nearly worn off. Almost everything else looks fine. Hmm, what have I been typing...

I've bored y'all with stories of acquisition of PC accessories (though didn't tell y'all about the Epson printer/scanner/photocopier ) but haven't changed my actual PC because a) it's an ache finding and setting programs, e-mail, broadband again b) see below and I don't mean the cobweb

(what the heck is scroll lock?) Why do these keys remain on modern keyboards? What is "Sys Rq" (on the same key as Print Scr) and who uses the key to the left of 1 - the one with ¬ on it? I sometimes have to do things using the command line / DOS window on my antiquated WinME desktop, and since in DOS, WinME filenames are truncated to things approximating to /docume~/my~/my~/garba~1.exe I have to use the ¬ key which actually produces the ~ character. OooOOoo! Electric knitting! (dirty needles!)

Hmmm, I seem to have a wee problem although I`m sure it`s easily sorted. I just tried to access a YouTube link posted by Antheil. Got the visuals but no sound. Checked everything at my end and all is hooked up properly. I then popped a DVD in and had no problem with sound on the Power player, tried it on Windows Media Player and guess what? ... No sound Windows then asked me to update Media which I have but now it`s asking if I want it to be the default media player. I`m not convinced that I do Any ideas you computer boffins out there? Jeez, I only wanted to giggle at Wilson, Kepple and Betty

Hmm - how odd, Mort. I can't be of much help, but please forgive an inane question: did you have the volume control on the YouTube clip turned up (YT remembers your volume settings from the last time you were on the site)?
I would say no to Windows Media being your default player - that would make it the default for all sound and visual stuff (including CDs and DVDs), and you probably don't want that.

Thanks trj. Yes, the volume was turned up on YT This has just reminded me that when I tried to access the sound link re. Kitty`s post on the Handel/Bach thread all was silence there too Richard, an admirable, albeit expensive, solution!

Dear Mort, sometimes YouTube gets a bit flakey on the weekend (don't we all?) You may be better just going straight to YouTube and entering Wilson and Keppel, so to speak, if you enter Walk like an Egyptian you may be disappointed, unless you are a fan of the Bangles. Or Zappa, Regyptian strut, the sleaziest tune ever on record.

There are lots of people who have probs with sound on YouTube apparently: http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=youtube+%22no+soundIt sounds like you may have a more general problem Mort, but there may be some help somewhere in those links. Otherwise I bow out...

All sorted! I overlooked the bloomin` obvious Without any intervention from me this computer decides to `mute` itself every now and again. Which is precisely what it did today It was fine yesterday. trj, you`re right. I will not be having Windows as my default media player. Enough trouble with their wretched programmes as it is! As you were, chaps

Question I wondered if anyone could help me with - how does one save program files onto an external hard drive? I'm running a PC with Windows Vista.
