Since I'm pretty knackered after nearly 46 hours of travelling (left Cape Town for the Airport 19.00 hours BST on Tues, arrived home about 17.00 today), I'll grant t-p just one of the 1500 or so images I've returned with tonight.....

It's the knees which really suffered, John: the left in particular has already caused me quite a bit of discomfort over the past nine months or so, and long downhill stretches over pretty difficult terrain were somewhat agonising, I can tell you: imagine working your way down a very uneven staircase where the treads could be anything from three to thirty inches (often with wobbly or even slippery rocks) for a continous descent of many hundreds of  feet, and that might give some idea of what had to be faced on three of the four walks. Over a quarter of the party had to miss some of the full mileage due to injury, wear and tear, or simply not being up to it: afraid that just wasn't an option for Ron.... Wink

Well done Ron!

You'd better get some sleep if you're not too jetlagged - hope you have a few days to recover now!

Cheers

Way to go,
Ron Dough!

What an experience! I'm not sure I could have done it.

Absolutely - it takes me all my time to get down the stairs!  Brilliant Ron - have a good rest and there's plenty of time to show us all the pictures when you're back to normal.  Kiss

No rest for the wicked at all...

I was called last night by a video company who asked whether there was any chance I could shoot stills for them at the big (Bag)Pipe Competition at Dumbarton tomorrow, and this morning there's been a request for me to do a corporate Role Play session next week - location as yet undisclosed, but doubtless somewhere Down South...

The good news re jet-lag is that since S.A. is only an hour ahead, it does't really exist: just standard knackeredness after travelling...

Here's a snap of the 'Maltese Cross' formation. You should be able to judge its size by the people at the base in the shadow. Very impressive!

Oz, I don't take it personally..... this time.

Ron,

Great to have you back, and another big slap on the back - extremely well deserved!

Get some rest and then we'll full you in on what's been going on here...

Welcome back, Ron! And congratulations. Sounds as if you can at least take a bit of down time today, even if you have to go piping tomorrow...

Get some rest and then we'll full you in on what's been going on here...

Ron Dough nobilmente e maestoso,
Thank you for pictures. They warm the heart and make one's day. The two that I have seen so far are gorgeous (in a different way). Please forgive me if it is not the right word, but you know my limitations. All I want to say that I like them very much. Thank you. You did the right thing by going and I think you did make the difference.

Thank you t-p;
We'll all have to wait for the photos of the biggest difference we made: clearing and enclosing a playground space for the orphanange: too busy working to use my camera, and on the final day far too wet, too: we saw no rain at all apart from that one day and then it just bucketed. But once you're wet, you're wet, and most of us were so determined to see the job finished that we just pressed on regardless. This time last year our guides had done a similar trek in the same area and it rained non-stop for four days, so we were very lucky - it was really warm for the time of year, too, about 27 degrees at midday, every day. The final day which was out free day was fine as well, which made the excursions to Table Mountain and Cape Point very pleasant indeed.
