I spotted this in The Observer’s TV and radio guide:

Radio 3 12.15 Music Matters. Britain’s oldest professional symphony orchestra conductor Mark Elder and players celebrate 150 years of the Hallé.

Reminds me of an old one in Australia: Haydn Symphony no. 59 in A Fire.

So who is Britain's oldest professional symphony orchestra conductor?

Colin Davis (81 this September)?

I think Charles MacKerras pips Colin Davis by year - he's 82.  It depends if we mean "British conductors" or "conductors of British orchestras", since Sir Charles shares nationality with our own Mr Sudden.

did anyone hear Mark Elder on In Tune last November when, in connection with the Halle's work with Colin Matthews he said how rare it was for an orchestra to work with a living conductor...
