AAAGGHHH! Just went to spin BWV101 as directed by Rilling (Hänssler Bach Edition), only to discover that there are two copies of the disc with 97-99 and no 100-102! I thought I had checked every disc when I got them. Somehow I missed that duplication and omission. Now I have to try and find someone else with the set to help out. Anyone here got that set. Someone needing 97-99 would be ideal.

Sorry, Bryn! I don't have that set! Sad

It's really infuriating when that sort of thing happens. I now try to listen to all CDs I buy within a week or two of purchase - which means I always have the perfect answer for anyone who says, "You can never have time to listen to all of them."

Hope you manage to get a replacement disc somehow!

(And just to make matters worse, 100 and 102 are marvellous works too ...)

Just tried looking on ebay, where there used to be a chap who had a few spares from that set. No sign at the moment. I know there are contributors to TOP who have the set, but it's rather more difficult to raise such issues there. Sad

Thanks for that, Baz! Is it the Leusink recording from the Brilliant set? It's a little closer to the speed I'm used to, but I've not yet heard it move or be articulated as I'd really like it to. (OVPP, natch! Wink) It's a long time since I've listened to it: I'd forgotten that extraordinary sequential purely instrumental episode, and the pedal harmonies towards the end hit home even more forcibly, I think, at a more flowing speed. I wouldn't say the dissonances exactly "evaporate" at faster speeds, but they "tell" in a completely different way.  I'd love to hear a group like Ricercar Consort perform this work.

Isn't it strange (or perhaps not?) how style of performance can make music sound like it's from a completely different era? I felt that with the Praeludium from the Missa solemnis that Mr Grew posted earlier: at first I couldn't place it at all, and was thinking at least seventy years too late! Forward-looking music? Or stylistic misrepresentation? Wink

Yes - you identified the performance I posted correctly (though no points for that I'm afraid! Wink). Correct forces, and correct tempi will inevitably lead to common-sense results. I'm not yet a complete adherent of the OVPP 'mafia', although I have performed this way - and often discussed the notion - with Andrew Parrott (who was a contemporary of mine as a student). I just feel it important to evince a performing style that captures the movement, line and harmonic idiom in a convincingly-synthesized manner that allows appropriate textual and musical expression.

I didn't (of course) quite mean that...but...

I often thought that such guys managed in their own ways to tease out something of the essence of 'Bach' that most box-standard mid-to-late-20th c 'serious' performances (generally adopting a thoroughly 19th-c attitude!) failed to accomplish.

While I continue to be ruthlessly teased by Mr Grew's Puzzle 117 (!), this is an opportunity to give out a few hints for Puzzles 103 and 113...

PUZZLE 103
This was completed in 1981 by a composer who died in 1996.

PUZZLE 113
This was written in 1929 by a composer who died in 1955.

Baz

OK - so nobody seems any the wiser then? Let's try something else...

The composer of 103 was Finnish.

The composer of 113 was Swiss.

Answers to both puzzles not on a postcard please!

Baz

P.S. While these remain unsolved, I can't replace them in the competition with new ones! Angry

Could you please tell me what is the identity of the following 'What-is-it' piece?

What-is-it?

Well John hovered around 114 on the discussions thread, without daring to take a stand on which of three pieces it was, but nobody has got near 116 or 118 yet. DO please try. Clues enough have been offered for 116, but 118 has a somewhat obscure Wagnerian connection.

Prompted by Mr. Bryn's laments ("without daring" - "DO please try") and realizing now that the sheer having attempted will outweigh any falling short we have decided to make further Adjustments to the Rules. Each attempted solution, even if it is erroneous, will henceforth attract 20 positive points, not minus 20 as has hitherto been the case. In order to deter frivolity a second attempted solution to any one puzzle within one hour of a first will attract 10 points, a third attempt at the same puzzle within one hour will attract 5 points, a fourth attempt at the same puzzle will attract no points, and subsequent attempts at the same puzzle within one hour will attract minus 20 points.

These adjustments will take effect from the time of this message.

Incidentally we would remind Mr. Bryn that his message as quoted, not being one of the six standard message types, properly belongs here with the clues and not in the competition thread.

That reminds us of this interesting if damaged portrait

which we found somewhere on the Internet and have not seen elsewhere. It is said to have been among the effects of one of Bach's sons, but we cannot remember which one.

No-one tried probing my snatches!

I did, I guessed wrongly at Feldman for one of them. But Quizmaster Grew has been calling in your numbers for a while now and if you are to honour local lore (for local people), it is now time reveal all.

As a confused 'member' of these boards... is this the thread to post my clues? or should I be on the test thread?
So that I don't lose any unnecessary points I decided to post here.

puzzle 106 is piece not as well know as his other version for the same combination. He died in 1937

puzzle 108 The composer of this piece was not as well known as his daddy in law I think.

puzzle 112 The best of 4 compositions in this medium by a composer born North of Watford.
