180 sounds like a Polonaise - Lyapunov's Polonaise op.16?

It does sound like a polonaise but that's not in the title and it's not Lyapunov. In fact the composer is Scandinavian.

A clue for 151, which has the distinction of being the oldest unsolved puzzle now. It is from a larger work from which a suite has been arranged, although it does not form part of that suite.

I wonder if No.180 could be Hugo Alfvén's ballet 'The Mountain King'?

Correct composer but sorry, no. Neither is Bryn correct on the discussion thread. One more clue as I'd like to wrap this up and I don't know how much he wrote. It's based on a bible story.

Then it must be Alfvén's Prodigal Son!

Yes! The Prodigal Son has returned. Well done - it's the prelude, actually.

I see that OS is online, but rb is not. Quick, I can reveal that the soloist in Puzzle 171 is favoured by rb over Robert Levin.

Puzzle 171 does indeed sound rather like Antonio Salieri's piano concerto in B flat major, the finale thereof.

And with good reason, for that is the very movement from which the extract is taken. How ever did you deduce that, I wonder. Wink

Now, what about Puzzle 167. Remember, there was a pupil/teacher relationship between the composers of Puzzles 171 and 167.

Could it be the Hummel mandolin sonata?

Not Hummel, but a rather more well know composer, and not quite a sonata, indeed in some lists, merely a work with certain boot-like associations.

It seems that Puzzle 151 has died a natural death and I have to reveal all.

The answer I was looking for was Hary Janos, by Kodaly. It's the part where he rides a wild stallion, when all attempts by others had failed. I think it's a colourful little episode and I don't know why it didn't make it into the well-known suite from that work.
